This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Musicians, some for tax reasons, that lived in Ireland

A few weeks ago I found myself ,through no fault of my own, listening to Def Leppard on the radio. It actually wasn’t too bad and I thought they’d be a good subject for one of these. I looked them up on youtube and well…. I decided against, but I still wanted to write about them, why?
As a teenager in the 80s there was an element of ‘glamour’ to Joe Elliot as he appeared regularly on various RTE shows, in the papers and so on. He was quite prominent, unlike other artists living here for Tax reasons many of whom keep a low profile. Def Leppard even managed to shoot a video for “Pour Some Sugar on Me” that consisted of knocking down a house on the Stillorgan Road which various people I knew claimed to have been in the crowd.
I hadn’t realised either how massive Def Leppard were at the time, they’ve sold over 100 million albums!
I made a few inquiries and there seems to have been quite a number of bands /Musicians living herey from the 80s onwards. Of course not all of them would have been doing so for tax reasons.
When I worked in Dalkey I remember seeing Lisa Stansfield a few times in pubs in the village and she along with Def Leppard were probably the higher profile of our tax break residents.
Others that lived here (although possibly all not for tax reasons) included Jim Kerr of Simple Minds ,members of Spandau Ballet. Sting lived in the wilds of Connemara, Marianne Faithful in Waterford. The list goes on to include Elvis Costello, Steve Earle, The Waterboys and supposedly David Essex. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber lived in a Castle in Tipperary too.
Looking at the Artists Exemption list from 2002 to 2012 we also see artists such as Pakistani Singer and actor Ali Haider living here for tax purposes.
