The reopening of the abortion debate got me listening again to the Sawdoctors song ‘Every Day’ and whilst they are not everyones cup of tea, they are a band that I’m fairly fond of. I first saw them in the late 80s supporting The Waterboys in the long gone ‘Top Hat’ in Dun Laogaire / Monkstown. They had a drummer (Padraig Stevens) who juggled and were just great fun. I’ve seen them countless times since at their own gigs and at various festivals and they are an excellent live act.
Yes they sang ‘I Used To Love Her’ but that aside they have some brilliant evocative songs. Anyone who was in Croke Park for the All Ireland Semi Final when Mayo toppled Dublin will vouch for the power of “The Green and Red of Mayo’ as it was played over the PA in the aftermath of the game. Tears rolling down Mayo cheeks as they celebrated victory whilst singing of Mayos “soft and craggy bogland, It’s tall majestic hills , Where the ocean kisses Ireland and And the waves carress it’s shore …”
What I like about them too is writing about the ordinary, the commonplace and indeed places themselves.

I’m always amazed by their longevity.
Ah, the Top Hat, saw the Damned and the Mission there. Happy Days. Except for the Mission bit.

I can’t say I ever liked them. It all reminded me too much of rural Austrian folk music, without the fascist undertones of course. I never got the gaa ‘sense of place’ thing with them either.

I was only ever reduced to tears at a football match in Huettledorf when the Internationale was sung at an Austria Wien away game in response to the Rapidviertelstunde from the home fans. We lost.
