From the mid 40s a letter from Ailtirí na hAiséirghe Louth Councillor Eoin O’Coigligh outlining some of Ailtirí na hAiséirghe s policy and attacking Mr T. Leslie of The Labour Party.

An interesting part there in Martin McGuinness’ speech, where he states:

‘…the resistance of a new generation of IRA freedom fighters supported on equal terms by articulate and committed Sinn Féin freedom fighters.’

I think it was Gerry Bradley who recalled how much of a blow it was to hear a Sinn Féin worker in Belfast in the 1980s tell him that Gerry Adams had stated that such workers were the equal of IRA volunteers and no longer subservient or deserving of less recognition.

I wonder how gradual was this deliberate elevation in esteem of grassroots [political] workers, and how much it varied from area to area, both in the six counties as well as this state.
