Finance Minister Michael Noonan has said the vast majority of Irish people are able to pay the property tax because they can afford up to €1,000 a year for premium television packages such as ‘Sky Sports’.
Mr Noonan was speaking in the Seanad last Thursday afternoon as part of the debate on the property tax, where he dismissed opposition claims that a majority of people won’t have an ability to pay the new tax, which will be on average €316 per house”

So many things to consider when parsing that stuff from Noonan out. But it’s such a stupid generalisation by him that it’s almost useless. Some are bundles with internet access as well and so on and so forth. Sub packages are a variety of prices from 300 upwards. He quotes a figure of 82 per cent paying for pay tv – but I’d love to see a detailed breakdown, this may help…as well as pointing to another flaw in his thinking…

Surely Noonan realises that circuses are needed to keep the masses absorbed. I suppose he watches “Stricktly come dancing”.
Since teh end of the “Killing” I have little to watch. I suppose I will continue to destroy the world economy by getting my daughter to download.

There’s this from the paper’s inter-galactic correspondent:

The tensions between the two traditions,which still survive in the modern Labour Party, are as much psychological as political. They go back to 1918 when Lenin sent Trotsky to Brest Litovsk to make peace with the Germans, to trade territory for time.
Trotksy, trying to have it both ways, did not do so. He came back to make fiery speeches in Moscow with the stupid slogan: Neither Peace Nor War. Lenin sent him back to do it properly…
… James Larkin Jnr also knew something Trots never learn: how to call off a strike. As he did at Independent Newspapers, in the 1970s, with a dignity that left the strikers holding the moral high ground.
Larkin left a large mark on the Labour Party. This explains some of its current tensions. By and large, most of the former Workers’ Party deputies were formed in the Larkinite-Leninist tradition of taking on Trots, taking a stand, and loyalty to a party line.
Conversely, apart from Ruairi Quinn, Emmet Stagg and Roisin Shortall, many of the old Labour Party come from a Trotskyite tradition of wanting it both ways. That is why Colm Keaveney, who wobbled before taking a stand, still strikes me as politically unreliable.
The other Labour wobblers did the opposite – they first struck poses and later trooped through the lobbies, proving they are in line with the Trotskyite tradition of never taking on its own side that goes back to Brest Litvosk. With luck, since nothing annoys the Irish people as much as wobbling, they will lose their seats.
Labour’s wobbling is bad politics. But so is that party’s betrayal of the majority of workers in the private sector. The symbol of that abandonment is the Croke Park Agreement…

Especially seeing as the same journalist wrote an article about the same woman in 2011 (http://www.independent.ie/national-news/mother-of-two-in-plea-for-protection-from-bullying-bank-2660671.html) (and the journalist is, I must assume, the same one who wrote http://www.independent.ie/opinion/analysis/i-signed-my-life-away-for-the-sake-of-city-centre-apartment-2106182.html about how she regrets buying an apartment in 2008 for €525,000…) A web search for Jillian Godsil shows that she has been popping up al over the place airing her woes about selling her mansion, when not writing articles about ‘exporting our problems’ which contains the line “To be a bankrupt often implies the person was an entrepreneur, a doer, a creator of jobs and wealth, not just a PAYE worker or public servant. The person who fails once may yet succeed again.” (http://www.thejournal.ie/readme/column-exporting-our-troubles-is-an-irish-speciality-405928-Apr2012/?r_dir_d=1) That “not just a PAYE worker or public servant” line is just so Sindo, isn’t it?

Funny that he thinks FF and SF would go together. I suppose the one good thing about McDowell that it’s very unlikely that he’ll be back in the Dail or involved with a new party, mainly because of his gargantuan ego (yeah I’ve watching Kill Bill). Though it’s really moot, because no new centre right party is going to be formed.

I shouldn’t be getting worked up about that political has been, whose only feted by sections of the media. Nevertheless there’s just something about him that makes my blood boil.
