This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… AC/DC – Live At River Plate January 5, 2013

Under the tree at Christmas was the double CD AC/DC Live at River Plate. Its funny finding myself in the queue for the CD player in the kitchen and vetoed control of the CD player in the car as the children seek to listen to the music they got for Christmas. So its only in the last few days that I’ve had a chance to listen to the album properly… and its brilliant!
Now of course some of that is reliving my Youth, the days of blasting their classic album ‘Back in Black’ , trying to copy their logo correctly to the canvass schoolbag and various copybook covers. The sew on patch on the long since shrunken denim jacket…..
They are on the go since 1973 yet the music hasn’t aged at all, indeed my son put the album on his ipod. There’s some old classics like ‘Back in Black’ and ‘Hells Bells’, newer ones like “Thunderstruck” and some such as “Black Ice” that I wasn’t too familiar with. Still it all fits together well.
Enjoy…

They’re oddly reliable again, after a couple of seriously dodgy patches in the 80s and 1990s. I’ve always loved the way they refuse to see themselves as a heavy metal band.

Magnificent stuff. Only missing this.

I like this live cut from the Bon Scott era band.

Coincidentally we were doing a lot of reminiscing about these lads over the New Year. The best Irish metal band, and a very good band full stop.

Spot on. Went to see them a couple of times in the SFX Centre off Gardiner St in the mid-late 80’s. Great live band. Incidentally, is today the anniversary of Phil Lynott’s death? Interesting point about AC/DC not regarding themselves as a heavy metal bad. Neither Thin Lizzy nor Mama’s Boys could be comfortably categorised as heavy metal either.

That’s very true. I really liked Mama’s Boys, and Thin Lizzy had some great moments (and one or two great albums at least – I’d actually rate Renegade too). But I was listening to Rory Gallagher and thinking how he was often appropriated by metal too but he was largely anything but, blues/rock/hard rock, all of them and none the worse for it.
