…on this polling result here that indicates a solid 70 per cent in favour broadly speaking of proposed Government legislation on X (mirroring many polls before it) and then compare and contrast with the apparent timidity of the government (and it would seem FG in particular) on the issue.
Interesting too the following, again which mirrors previous polling over an extended period of time:
Asked a separate question about whether abortion should not be permitted under any circumstances or allowed in certain circumstances, 12 per cent said it should never be permitted, while 85 per cent said it should be allowed in certain circumstances.
Why all the foot-dragging, why all the very public wrestling with conscience. Why indeed one might ask is it that a disproportionate number of FG TDs seemingly are more anti-abortion provision (at least rhetorically) than those they purport to represent?

except 70% is in a fairly consistent band in recent polling for similar questions?
also it seems fairly clear that those opposed to any legislation for abortion are limited to a little over 10% of the population.

The problem with these polls is that people answer different questions to the questions posed. Do we really think that 10% of Irish people actually believe that abortion should never be available? Even in the case of a substantial risk to a mother’s life? It seems unlikely and yet that is what some of these polls indicate.
The problem many FG TDs have is with the suicide provision. It’s a problem I’d share. There are no circumstances where abortion should be used as a treatment for suicidal ideation. It isn’t about liberalism or conservatism, it is about logic and evidence.
