The update of the Sunday Independent website continues to perplex. Is the idea to make it more difficult to actually read what they publish? Perhaps so. Has anyone found anything in amongst it today?
The Cedar Lounge Revolution 
Another opinion poll on party support, this one taken by Millward Brown after the promissory note deal. Interestingly, it looks like FF are the ones benefitting from that deal, not the government parties: Fianna Fail 27%; Fine Gael, 25%; Labour 13%; Sinn Féin, 20%; and Independents/Others, 16%. Those figures are taken from the Irish Times’ summary, although the one on the Sindo website splits out the final figure into ULA 1%, Greens 1% and others 14%. Not sure whether that last point says something about the Times’ own reporting bias.
The Sindo also has a headline about FG rebels being in talks with Declan Ganley but I decided that, on balance, I’d rather spend this afternoon painting the kitchen wall and watching it dry.

F.F./S.F nationalist populist 47%
But with Micheal Martin comparing Sinn Fein to the nazis a coalition of F.F/S.F now seems less likely

Support for any of these parties is probably not very deep and the undecideds are above 40%.
The regressive F.G/Labour coalition will probably hang together for another 3 years. If they don’t S.F could be in power, North and South, for the 1916 centenary.

whereas in the 1920s or slightly before in Ireland we had an entire, and technically illegal, parallel government? and that worked out well, for some at least…

That’s what stand out when you look back at the last days of the Weimar Republic, isn’t it – not the Brownshirts marching in the streets, beating up and murdering their opponents; not the police opening fire on left-wing demonstrations; not the government ruling by decree and ignoring parliament; no, the time when things really got ugly was when a few people marched into the council chamber and shouted a few slogans before having their heads slammed against the wall by the police. THAT was when German democracy died.

And this is what passes for FF publicity photos these days is it?
You couldn’t photoshop it up. Absolutely false ‘sincere’ grin and quasi-religious pose with prominent wedding-ring.
And they are ahead in the polls? Quite some achievement by FG/Labour.

CL, you forgot the potential FF/Labour conservative coalition at 40%. And I’d quibble with you omitting “conservative” from your description of the potential FF/SF mash up.
An election is a long way off of course. But on these figures, FF will have serious choices to make in terms of how many candidates to run in each constituency. Or maybe not – one FF candidate in all Dublin and major urban constituencies, two in rural constituencies?

Eoin Harris was very pro-Fianna Fail this week: does he know which way the wind is blowing? He mentioned Lowry and how FG are as enmeshed in corruption as FF but never get called out on it.
