I think the IT has a piece up today but it has been shocking how little coverage the story has received. While it might be regrettable that the O’Brien controlled press would not cover the story, the silence of RTE and the IT has been shocking. I didn’t actually understand this post until I did some searching.

While googling the story I came across a recent image of he-who-shall-not-be-named at a talk in DCU. He was sitting beside Burton, Quinn and a bunch of other cabinet ministers.

I have never been so glad for TV3 in my life.

It’s amazing isn’t it? The IT and RTÉ’s lack of engagement is crazy. Not good at all.

To be honest I think the reaction of the Times and RTE stems from jealousy that the Sindo broke the story and the notion that if they pretended the story wasn’t important it wouldn’t matter that they’d been scooped. That’s how petty journalism is sometimes.
I know everyone enjoys getting in a few licks at the Sindo but the fact is that the paper which did break and cover the story is the one where O’Brien actually owns a chunk of the company. There’s no excuse for the cowardice of the Times and RTE which may also have something to do with their wish to leave the reporters who broke the story out on a limb.
I also think it shows how ill advised and silly the occasional posts on here expressing the wish that O’Brien will ‘sort out the Sindo,’ are.

course the sindo breaking it has other motives that don’t necessarily motivate the rest. RTÉ have had the tape three weeks though.

You wonder if it is Lowry on the tape and he did mislead the tribunal even the smallest sliver of sending a TD to jail is too far for a lot of them. Some TDs anyway.

You can practically see the bods in RTE making the case to themselves that in these difficult times for the nation surely the national broadcaster has a duty not to undermine faith in elected representatives and adopt a responsible attitude blah de blah. There’s also cowardice. And the fact that they wouldn’t give Lefties the satisfaction of seeing Lowry put away.
Of course if they had a similar tape of some lad planning to take delivery of a few cartons of illegal cigarettes, they’d have played it straight away.

And everyone else is either too afraid of sue-happy wealthy individuals, or under the thumb of FG.

On my mobile so I can’t link but there was an excellent article (by Michael Clifford if my memory serves) in the examiner which placed the Sindo coverage in the context of the O’Brien-Harris feud.

The start of the #vinb show showed just how dreadful the current media situation is. Almost the entire panel had been threatened with legal action by O’Brien because of their coverage of his involvement in corrupt activities.

He uses his wealth to buy the media and then uses his influence to silence those who displeased him. Those he can’t silence, he bullies with his small legion of lawyers.

But hey, at least FG can look forward to good coverage when they need it.

On a sidenote, I’ve noticed Newstalk have taken to interviewing Shane Coleman on some political matters and then report his comments as the lead story during the news headlines.

And…contrast this to the heroic bashfest in this week’s ‘Irish Times’ on Ming. Of course a get-the-left-by-proxy crusade. Isn’t Miriam Lord such a courageous and witty journalist?

Just been informed by the RTÉ presenter that Ming’s troubles “couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Independents”. This despite Pringle having just made the point that the Independents have little or nothing to do with each other.
