Was looking at The Clár For The upcoming Fianna Fail Ard Fheis (which I’ve posted here) and amongst other motions this one caught my eye.
Now there are many things wrong with RTE but this is taking it a bit far ….

I also saw a motion ‘that this AF welcomes govt’s proposal to abolish a Civil Court of Appeal where there is a significant backlog etc’

Would it make any difference? So long as TG4 and Lyric FM stay in public hands, what’s the problem?

Apart from the fact that a recent survey showed that about two-thirds of the population get their news from RTE radio and television (very little of it from niche services such as Lyric FM), I’m sure it’s absolutely no problem to flog it off to some other would-be O’Ligarch.

There’s not much real editorial difference between our putatively public RTE and the O’Ligarch’s media, though, is there?
Maybe the demand should be for a “People’s RTE” though what form that might take I don’t know.

Maybe they’d be slightly better if they were privatised given that I sometimes think RTE have a notion of themselves as reporting stories from the viewpoint of ‘responsibility towards the state’ which in reality means responsibility towards the political establishment.

Hard to have much sympathy for RTE given that if the privatisation of any other state body was being mooted, Finucane, Kenny, Duffy et al would be packing their shows with right wingers insisting that it was the only way to go in the current climate. It’s hard to see how privatisation could make the station any more right wing in its outlook. You’re far more likely to get a dissent against neo-liberal orthodoxy on Vincent Browne’s show, when Browne is hosting it, and he’s on TV3.
Watched Prime Time last night and in a segment on rural crime there was a blatant and transparently cynical attempt by a reporter to make a woman cry about a dead child I almost couldn’t believe I was witnessing. It was like Broadcast News.

The crossing breeding of the old ‘Primetime’ with the ‘Frontline’ has produced a mutant more offensive, right wing and disgraceful ‘Primetime’. They’re obviously packing the audience with caricatures who’ll provide guaranteed outrage or entertainment value. ‘Primetime’ is now a sort of Jeremy Kyle/Jerry Springer current affairs programme. And, to add to it and top it all, two of its three regular presenters – Pat Kenny and Miriam O’Callaghan – are beneficiaries of tax regulations that permit them to not be directly employed, therefore considerably reducing their tax bills; both, but particularly Kenny, are extremely aggressive partisans of austerity and pay cuts for workers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Clare Byrne is or will soon be availing of similar tax arrangements. That should be flung in their faces by every trade unionist, Left politician or dissident from the orthodoxy who is permitted onto a ‘Primetime’ panel.
Jack O’Connor a couple of years back brought up the issue of Pat Kenny’s house and Kenny almost exploded with indignation, with O’Connor apologising immediately. Politeness towards these people is inappropriate in the current context.

Clare Byrne is actually more right-wing than either of them. Back in the halycon days of the Celtic Tiger she devoted considerable energy to abusing nurses who were taking limited strike action.
