Sometimes a new or different guitarist can add so much to a bands sound that its hard to see how they got on without them. Buddy Miller is such a guitarist.
Miller was part of the Spyboy band that backed Emmy Lou Harris on the Spyboy tour and his guitar style along with the imagination of Daniel Lanois gave a different sound to many of Emmy Lous classic songs. I saw Emmy Lou a few times in the ten years Miller was in the band and he was brilliant.
What really blew me away though was when he was the guitarist with Steve Earle and The Dukes as they toured the album ‘El Corazon’, alas he never played on the album but his guitar added a real ‘dirty’ and ‘hard’ sound to Earles music.
So impressed was I by him that I went off and bought one of Buddy Millers solo albums and then one of his wife Julie Millers albums and over time I’ve got my hands on a some more of their material.
Described by Emmy Lou Harris as “one of the best guitar players of all time.” and Steve Earle as “the best country singer working today.” Buddy Miller is by no means a household name. He’s played on and produced countless records for other artists including Harris,Earle, Alison Krauss, Robert Plant and a host of Country stars like Shaun Colvin and Lucinda Williams.
His own material and material he’s done with his wife is mostly Country and Blues influenced. Well worth a listen.
In the first clip below he gives a background to himself and the album with Julie Miller ‘Written in Chalk’.
