This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Declan O’Rourke June 15, 2013

I’ve seen Declan O’Rourke live numerous times and his charm and wit really comes across in his shows. Possibly my favourite was seeing him in the Burren College of Art a few years ago. The performance and venue were fantastic and he was joined by local singer Maura O’Connell, who was home from Nashville for her holidays at the time…
There was another reason why the show was memorable. For a good part of the set there was a bat lose in the auditorium. The audience sat there in amusement, then terror as the bat flew down over the crowd. So as he played a bat was swooping around, at the back of everyones mind was the bat landing on their heads, the audience ducking in fright and O’Rourke played on without flinching and made a few comments about the bat. The double doors of the hall were opened out into the yard to try and temp the bat, eventually after a couple of near misses it finally left and the doors were quickly closed. It was a strange gig to say the least.
I’ve all his albums and also one of him live in the NCH with the RTE Concert Orchestra. Live he’s a charmer. By all accounts hes doing well with a number of artists from Josh Grobin to Eddie Reader covering his songs. He’s performed with all sorts from Paul Weller to Paul Brady.
His website

“We Didn’t mean to go to sea” and “Love is the Way”.
