Liffey Bridge July 19, 2013

Sad to say that Tony Gregory/Lady Augusta Gregory’s names aren’t in the final selection for the new Liffey Bridge. I felt from the time that suggestion was mooted – and their names were on the long list – that it was an extremely elegant way to commemorate both a woman and a man on a public structure. But, that chance has passed.
So who is left?
The conteners are Willie Bermingham, founder of Alone; Frank Duff, founder of the Legion of Mary; Rosie Hackett, a trade unionist who was involved in the 1913 Lockout; Kay Mills, who played camogie for Dublin, and Bram Stoker, creator of Dracula.

Apart from [Rosie Hackett’s] largely unsung role in 1913, promoters of her cause point out that not one of the 16 bridges over the River Liffey between Heuston Station and the East Link is named after a woman.
Any predictions as to the final name?
I think it will be Rosie Hackett – there has been a good public campaign for her. I must say the process has amused me a lot – the amount of meetings that the petitions committee had from long list to short list to shorter again list to shorter again list is unreal.

I only know of one bridge in the 26 Counties called after a woman.

I don’t know The Mary McAleese Bridge.
Maybe there’s two then.

Nano Nagle bridge in Cork? I like the Rosie Hackett idea, though Kathleen Mills also good. Irish sportswomen as neglected as their political contemporaries, perhaps more so. One of the greatest footballers of our generation recently retired, with hardly a mention outside of local media, largely because it was Ladies football she played.

My understanding is that Dublin councillors are the electorate and Labour councillors form the largest group. If this is so, I’d say Willie Bermingham must be short-odds favourite
