Whilst searching through a box of old leaflets in the attic I found a ticket for Steve Earle and the Dukes in the National Stadium from the late 80’s. Earle was touring the Copperhead Road album which was one of the soundtracks to my student years. That tour would spawn the live album ‘Shut up and die like an aviator’.
Aside from singing Earle has written a number of books (I read the one of short stories which was OK) , acted in The Wire and has a fairly big part in Treme (some of his songs were also used in both and his version of “Way Down in the Hole” was used for the fifth season of The Wire.)

He also made a great album of Townes Van Zandt covers. Here he is with Lyle Lovett doing one of the tracks that is on that record. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycdIujzgXgY
