FF’s long march back… January 4, 2014

…and is this potentially another step along the way, the not unexpected news that Cllr. Mary Fitzpatrick is to seek the nomination for candidate for the Dublin European Parliament seat.

Famously in opposition to the Ahern regime, and in the belly of the beast, being a councillor in his political back yard, she’s probably well positioned -not least as Cllr. as it happens and not a former or serving FF TD, to present a face that is, to put it mildly, detached from many of the excesses of the previous regime.

It’s far far too easy to see her as a sure thing, but she’s a reasonable reputation on the ground (garnered not least in that opposition to Ahern) and is probably as formidable a candidate as they can field at this point in time.

It’s interesting too that after the Christmas break, the faux political peace that that constituted, we’re moving back to business as usual, and more with the upcoming local and European elections.

Presumably, if she wins, she’ll be back to Dublin Central for the GE in 2016, profile suitably enhanced.

That would be an inspired choice from the FF point of view now in that Mary Fitzpatrick whatever may be said of her policies would have a good reputation for integrity. The impression I have of FF now under Martin and with him being by far the worst example is of a bunch of suits willing to say virtually any populist thing to curry favour again. They’ve completely turned their back on the Brian Lenihan “hard decisions”, take it or leave it approach and that in my opinion is the main reason they have lost some support in 2013.

The Ahern opposition is based entirely on cliques, self-interest and internal party climbing rather than any ‘opposition to Bertie Ahern’ though right?
