Wealth, inherited and otherwise… March 17, 2014

…of the five wealthiest families in the UK, as determined by Oxfam – whose wealth is equal to or greater than the poorest 20% of the UK population, it’s perhaps notable that two of that five come from long extant wealth. Whether any are exactly self-made is a bit of an open question. Perhaps Mike Ashley? It would be useful to see stats on those beyond the five.

No, though given two are from ‘titled families’ we could perhaps cautiously put a tick in a certain class category.

Do you reckon Oxfam left them out because they didn’t want to complicate things by starting a pro-/ anti- royalist argument?

I genuinely don’t know. It probably would be so, no? Wouldn’t the Prince of Wales’ interests in Cornwall alone run into the billions? Or is that a massive overstatement? Must go looking.

It’s small change compared to these guys. The most valuable thing “belonging” to the royal family is the Queen’s picture collection but they stopped counting that as being part of her “fortune” a while ago since she could hardly go and flog the lot at Christie’s if she wanted to.

You can’t put up taxes, though, or the Duke if Westminster will emigrate and take Belgravia and Mayfair with him. 😊
