“The annual standing charge for water will be €50 per house, or less, with the average yearly bill expected to come in below €300, The Irish Times has learned.” Just spreading the Good News.

I’m sure they’ve all forgotten all about that election thing.
Sure they’re all too busy getting us all back on track after our wild partying.

You deliberately left out the words ” For Now ”
I`m convinced that the standing charge will rise like the flood waters ( I made a pun !! ) during storm Darwin and not recede.

And speaking of puns. They’re bringing in a flat water charge… just watch out, soon they’ll be bringing in a sparkling water charge too. I’ll get my togs.

I see Sinn Fein have apologised for the anti-choice letter (“we are not pro choice and not in favour of abortion) they distributed in Belfast. Not to women of course. To the Bishop whose name they were using to shore up their moderate credentials.

FG 21%, SF 20%, FF 20%, LAB 9%, GP 4%, IND/OTH 26%. It’s based on a sample of 577 after all of B&A’s jiggery-pokery has been done, the IND/oth figure would have the highest margin of error at 3.58%. Although I’d strongly suggest that this is one of those polls that falls into that missing 5% from the phrase ‘95% confidence interval’. Still, should unease some bums.

The figures are the figures, but the commentary of the linked report is annoying. The conclusions they draw go beyond the data available to them. There is nothing in the data that suggests “In reality, the average citizen is not particularly exercised by the ins and outs of the Callinan/Shatter saga. Rather, he/she has been appalled at the spectacle of the Taoiseach and his senior advisors expending valuable time and energy protecting its own short term interests at a time when the economy is about to turn a corner”. This is just an interpretation of the writer.
Again, the “Independents” category is problematic. The conclusion of the writer that this represents a protest vote is unfounded in the stats.
And of course, the margin of error is ignored in all of the commentary.
Finally, I note that according to this poll, most people have read a book in the last month. Yeah, right. If that was the case, there would be many more bookshops around the country.

General election stuff. how are labour holding. Looks a bit mad, greens at 4%. nice though, independents/other leading and the rest at parity. Suppose we will find out in a few weeks what the make up of the independent vote it. Is there any way to project or get a hint at what a seanad would look like with these polls.

The Minister for Education sees a problem with the “feminisation of education” i.e. that most teachers are women. His solution is to make Higher Level Maths a necessity for qualification to train to be a teacher. Total logic fail, minister.

Interesting article on disadvantage in education, by Deis School Principal. “Three months of summer holidays only exacerbates the disadvantage. Students mostly do not have the luxury of a month in the Gaeltacht, a summer course learning a foreign language, a sports or art and crafts camp or holidays in a foreign country with its mind-broadening experience.
DEIS students arrive back at the end of August and teachers almost have to begin again, such is the educational and experiential chasm that has developed.
The holiday question is something I agree with. In Denmark teachers are better paid but get 6 weeks holidays.

The dissidents will no more listen to Dominic McGlinchey than the mainstream movement did.A minor figure craving media attention and who NEVER was known as “Dominic Og ” -a name given to him by a couple of journalists who thought it sounded more sensational.
