End of one road for Joe Higgins April 28, 2014

…who won’t contest the next general election.
When the next general election arrives in 2016 I will be 67, and I am very anxious that a new generation of Socialist Party public representatives are continuing, if you like, the work that the party and I have done for quite a lengthy period.
Questions would have arrived in the context of a byelection that if we won a seat, would Ruth Coppinger and me be standing in the next election.
Would it be possible for the Socialist Party to take two seats [in 2016]? I feel it is better to clarify the position now.
A big loss to everyone on left

Yes, /A great fighter. And fair play, I see he is saying he is not retiring from politics.

I think Ruth will be a good successor. I think he has been an incredible activist. I am impressed at his energy. My own has shrunk down the years. But we will still be seeing him where ever he is needed.

Wow – is he really in his mid-sixties?
It’s a shame to see him go – but I guess even the tireless grow older. And going while he can still pass on the skills and knowledge of the constituency to a younger generation is a good idea. Good to see a woman on the ticket as well.

Honest question, assuming Ruth wins in the by-election, will there be only one SP candidate (Ruth) for the general election?

Joe has said “sharks” in the Dáil more than every other TD combined. His speech on the Lockout last year was one he was born to give. Less about the Labour Party’s amendment to the motion the better.
