…the usual skirmishing over numbers…any thoughts on the protests overall from around the state?

There were a few hundred in Navan today, down from over five thousand last time. I wouldn’t read too much into the numbers. The only number that matters is the number who will pay the bills when they arrive. I suspect people might be bringing their protest back into their private sphere, rather than engaging in a succession of public protests which ultimately isn’t what an awful lot of people are really into doing of a Saturday afternoon. I can’t explain the tenfold reduction in numbers in Navan otherwise, I don’t believe it’s necessarily people acceoting that water charges are inevitable by any means.

+ 1 Many people are taking a wait-and-see approach. Some are registering on a ‘just-in-case’ basis. Another piece of legislation has still to be passed outlining procedures for dealing with non-payment. Then we shall see. A campaign for mass boycott must follow and one which offers defence to those who refuse to pay. As somebody said to me “If I’m on my own, I’ll be snookered”.

Hearing ‘bigger than I expected’ re Dublin, and RTE leading with ‘scuffles’. M
Not much help, I know. On a related topic, am being told tenants in managed properties are getting threatening letters from estate agents regarding non-payment.

Waiting for the firecracker thrown at the Guards at the Dáil to be reported as explosive device hurled at our democracy by Jim Cusack tomorrow.

It’s just a small and incremental step, from firecracker to molotov cocktail. Democracy under threat.

Water protestors also have a connection to ISIS so the threat is serious.

I don’t think that’s true roddy, or rather when would you date any great belief that some here thought he was right, the 90s? Hardly. The 00s? Definitely not.

And note the following from 2009 on here written by Garibaldy.

Reasons not to trust the Sunday Independent’s Jim Cusack

Yes during the 80’s and 90’s Cusack had a reputation of being in the same boat as several other journalists in the Harris -Cadden mould. We all know what outfit they preferred in the North ,some of whose adherents can be found on here.

roddy, that’s absurd, you’re suggesting despite clear evidence I’ve given above that on here there aren’t any (at least amongst those of us who are directly involved in the site) who agree with Cusack, and moreover they don’t agree with him from an explicitly republican viewpoint. Nor is it fair to insinuate that people simply because they supported the WP in the 80s (90s hardly counts) they unthinkingly fell in line with Harris, Cadden, or Cusack. Anything but. I always thought Harris and his analysis was a crock – perhaps because like a lot of us my analysis was rooted in republicanism.

It is true that De Rossa and many in his crew took a not disimilar line to him but you’ll be waiting a long time for anyone to defend them here.

Got to say, you are far too quick to dish out stuff and make assumptions about others. It’s not appropriate for this site.

About 400 in Shannon and 300 in Ennis (although the organisation of the Ennis protest seemed to be a bit of a shambles).

Hundreds involved in local campaign activities in many locations around Limerick and county towns (including the unfurling of a We Won’t Pay banner over King John’s Castle).

I am surprised wbs that you would censure me for stating the Fact that Cusack’s attacks on SF are never denounced by certain posters on this site. They never challenge his nonsense like “provos poison Dundalk water” and if you can show me one instance where Garibaldy attacked Cusack for dissing SF,I will accept whatever sanction you feel necessary. The stick line is everything Cusack says is shite with the exception of his antI SF “ANALYSIS”

Just can’t deal with reality when it impinges on your worldview roddy can you? Better to simply ignore and shift ground slightly back to the comfort zone. Refusing to deal with arguments and repeating childish, and as often as not inaccurate, insults is just trolling plain and simple. There’s no need for it.

You mildly admonish Cusack but talk about “proxy bomb horrors” that “many believe” McGuinness authorised.Straight out of the school of journalism that the Cusacks of this world practice.I could say that “many believe” that say Garland authorised x,y or z but I would never sink so low even if my opinion of Garland is well known.

You do realise roddy you are just embarrassing yourself? The first link provided questioned whether a journalist with Cusack’s record for factual inaccuracies ought still to be employed. It’s nothing but whataboutery from you here, and incredibly weak whataboutery at that. It’s contributing nothing, and no-one wants to read it.

Your utter failure to engage with anything about actual current politics in the north, say the austerity and cuts, where there is actual criticism directed at the people you support by a wide range of people, compares greatly to this sort of response.

You use a post in your defence where you mildly admonish Cusack whilst stating that “many believe “McGuinness “authorised horriffic proxy bombs. This is straight from the Cusack school of journalism and if I was to say that Garland for instance is “believed by many” to have authorised x,y or z, I would be denounced and rightly so.You see your crowd were to the fore in gutter journalism north and south and dont like to be reminded of it.

If no- one wants to read it,then get me banned as your outfit did when it supported section 31.And dont quote some obscure statement “opposing censorship” Harris was the real face of the WP in RTE along with that discrace to journalism “today tonight” which was heavily influenced by your party.Read Mary McAleese’s account of her treatment by your colleagues and how news was distorted when youtalk about “world views ” and “reality”

Like

I’ve no interest in getting you banned roddy. Absolutely none whatsoever. It’s not me you’re making an eejit of but yourself. I would like you not to troll but to actually engage with some current political issues.

As for Section 31, the WP consistently opposed it, not least because when it was introduced it was aimed at it as well as others. Some people within it may have supported it, but not the WP. As for political groups within RTÉ, FF was the biggest and most important.

I somehow doubt it was FF turned “today tonight ” into the Ken Magennis” show when dealing with the north.

roddy, this is terrible stuff. You’re really good at dishing it out but absolutely unable to accept any criticism. So therefore you seem to believe you have a license to say anything you like but anyone who tries to counteract it is the worlds worst. Or to put it another way your approach is to be as insulting and coat-trailing as you like about others but can’t hack it when others raise even the softest counter argument.

It’s not even that you’re unable to accept there are different interpretations, it is that you are always right and you can say whatever you like and everyone else is entirely wrong but woe betide if they dare to criticise you.

Even my incredibly mild push back is ‘censure’. No one is talking about banning, what we’re talking about is that you get a sense of proportion and realise that insulting all and sundry here, making entirely unjustifiable slurs and being just downright wrong isn’t going to be unnoticed and isn’t justified.

You’re not the policeman of discussion and debate on this site and you really should cop yourself on a bit.

As to Harris, well if you read the Lost Revolution, or indeed had any direct knowledge of the WP you’d understand that he and the group around him were operating pretty much autonomously inside RTÉ. Some inside the party were happy with this, others weren’t. But it’s not a simple dynamic of him being the expression of the WP, or vice versa – as the TLR notes when it came to the crunch he had feck all support inside the party. And I’m as harshly critical of the treatment by that group of McAleese or indeed others in RTÉ and elsewhere – who I’ve met in person – who were done down by them. Indeed I’ve the experience of being attacked publicly by him myself for being too close to the left (and SF) subsequently. So perhaps you should ease up on the gratuitous insults.

enjoyed yesterday. taught after the lull and the joe duffy being upset all week that numbers might have been down but fell in with my local area on the dublin march, people i have known for years and never knew them to stick their head above the parapet out again. making their own chants on the spot, bit of helpful criticism and good banter on the efforts.

surprised to hear numbers down outside dublin, have/had hopes that the strength of this is at local level and thats where it needs to be re enforced.

I agree Shea, but the R2W campaign doesn’t seem to be making much effort to organise locally. See some posters around for a meeting of the We Won’t Pay group in my area of Cork this week, but nothing else going on to provide leadership in organizing localities.

Are R2W trying to organise people anywhere?

Like

Mark P - February 1, 2015

No. A few of the myriad of local groups are called “right2water”, but there’s no more link between those groups and the steering committee than there is with the other local groups. “Right2water” is a free floating steering committee. It does not organise on the ground.
