Irish water charges: If they’re going to deduct it anyway, why register? March 24, 2015

A fair question, I think, in view of the latest news from Irish Water. For apparently the government:
is understood to be considering introducing legislation to recoup unpaid water charges from people’s income.
Latest figures show 1.23 million people have registered with Irish Water, with just under a million of them Irish Water customers.
And that out of, well, perhaps, sort of, kind of…:
The company believes there are a total of 1.5 million customers.
And:
The Government is now thought to be considering taking unpaid water charges from peoples’ wages or social welfare payments.
A distinction would be made between people who cannot pay and those who will not pay.
Well, that’d be nice, some sort of differentiation between different incomes. Though the question comes to mind why not at first and why not through general taxation? But answers there are none to such questions.
You ask a fair question.
This quango of a government are not in anyway concerned with fairness or honesty at this time. The action of Lemmings springs to mind!

I take it this means that they’re abandoning the notion that it’s an independent entity, after all how can it be an independent ‘utility’ if it’s being helped by the state to collect its revenues? They’re really struggling now with the basic logic of their position in all of this, the question is will the public react to such blatant codology with the amount of scorn it deserves?

Private entities are allowed to harvest from income at source though, aren’t they? Although only after a court order….so are IW going to get half a million court orders?

Another thought about Irish Water’s stepping from blunder to blunder …
People who have less than the average income will use less if water is priced. The charge is based, I presume, ultimately, on water used by end-users. The result must be more water for sale and less reason to fix leaks (especially local leaks).
Another possibility is that IW fixes the leaks. To do this they will have to increase borrowing, to be repaid with interest. To pay themselves as before they would have to keep up the prices even if they have more water for sale. But they can’t force people to use it, so we may find that living standards drop for the least well off plus IW won’t be able to pay interest and won’t continue to invest.
It’s bonkers.
