An interesting development for Fianna Fail and Renua Ireland

A FIANNA FÁIL councillor is set to run for Renua Ireland in the Carlow-Kilkenny by-election.
In a coup for Lucinda Creighton’s new party, Patrick McKee, who was only elected to Kilkenny county council last year, is set to contest for the party in the by-election on 22 May.
A formal announcement is expected tomorrow.

Bad news for FF as he is highly thought of, but very good news for Renua. McKee made the news during the Local Elections when his posters were the subject of some homophobic attacks . So his profile would be the opposite socially than some of the initial Reform Alliance TDs and Senators.
For Fianna Fail, well it’s bad news, all over the country their selection conventions are taking place, in many areas the ticket will be limited to one selected locally and a female candidate added by HQ. So there are going to be an unusually high number of disgruntled candidates who fail to make the party ticket. Depending on how McKee performs in the By-Election, Renua may well be an option for some of them.

Just for context, in the most recent Phoenix there was a story claiming that McGuinness blocked McKee with a family succession in mind (for my money, dumping the PD-esque ‘Motormouth’ instead would be a better move for FF.)

The FF conventions are going to leave many ambitious young cllrs (predominantly male) disappointed. As FF are stuck in the polls with new stories of infighting in the Indo almost daily, a good few of these young tykes will jump ship.
The FF conventions are also going to make bad electoral selections. They were boasting of a huge turnout in their Kerry convention. The result is that they are unlikely to field a candidate from either Tralee or Killarney.
There is potential for another geographical mess in Tipperary, Waterford, Wicklow and many other constituencies, which will further hamper them.
