Dangerous radicalism in evidence during the British Labour Party leadership contest… August 25, 2015

Steady on there Andy Burnham… For speaking of people and comfort zones,

Labour leadership candidate Andy Burnham has said that Labour should be prepared to raise taxes on the rich to pay off the deficit, arguing that for too long the party had been frightened of using the word “tax”.
Speaking at a rally in central London on Monday night, Burnham said Labour had previously been too timid and repeated pledges to bring the railways into public ownership, scrap the charitable status for private schools and replace tuition fees with a graduate tax.

Evidence, if any were needed, that a Corbyn candidacy is having a direct political effect by pushing the terms of the conversation even slightly towards the left.

Andy Burnham’s campaign headquarteres is owned by Marlybone Investments which was incorporated in the Seychelles, a well known tax haven. He made his first major speech in the Headquarters of Ernst & Young. Draw your own conclusions about how “left” he is.

And has repeatedly said that questioning Trident and the relationship with NATO is a red (perhaps better blue) line for him.

Perry is always worth a read – I usually come away with a few new words at the very least

Haha I has a very similar thought as regards his use of words. It’s an interesting essay.

The financial problems in China and global finance capital haven’t gone away, you know.

Wall St. demanding further interest rate cuts. What happens when the PBOC interest rate is also at 0%?

I wonder whether the Chinese authorities have their own ‘to big to fail’ hangups or will they let something in financial la-la-land go under?

And what Wall St. wants, Wall St. gets.

More QE (i.e. electronic speculation tokens) from Goldman-Sachs man at the ECB and the PBOC.

Happy days!

I like Simon Reynolds’ observation on the possible hauntological appeal of Corbyn’s candidacy. “Corbyn’s beard and clothes are reassuringly reminiscent of a kindly teacher you might have had in the 70s or 80s, earnestly attempting to speak to the kids on their own level, talking about loving Dark Side of the Moon. The ghost of an Open University lecturer. A figure from a Look Around You bygone era.”
