Those last few recounts… February 29, 2016

Dublin Bay North. Key in terms of the LP. As of this evening… no, I won’t jinx it. There’s info here.

Dublin South Central. Another key one for AAA-PBP. Can anyone see them not taking the seat? Again, I’m afraid to jinx it.

Wexford – gone FG not SF. Speaking of SF, can I with my apparently crypto-Provo hat on say a good word for Donegal North East TD Pádraig MacLochlainn. If ever there was a political Sophie’s choice it was that between him and Tom Pringle. Two very fine people.

Dublin South West, predictions?

Longford Westmeath?

And are we into tomorrow? Surely not.

SF were pipped to at least 6 seats by a few dozen votes here and there… too soon to tell about the last couple – but if they lose there, it’ll also be tight.

Wouldn’t take a huge spike in votes next time to put them in range of 30. They didn’t get much of a seat bonus, but neither did they get much of a penalty (a first).

Dublin South West, I can’t see the result changing. We went through the final two counts yesterday where the most discrepancies were likely to be found. The gap narrowed to 122 but the returning officer said that he could see no discernible difference that would alter the result.
FG got their legal heavyweights out and demanded a full recount.

Having had a glimpse of the resources that the big parties have I feel sorry for Brid Smith as I presume the similar legal bigwigs are down battling for FF. It’s slow and painful but I think that she’ll hold on.

Kitty Holland sez Zappone has held the seat in DSW.

I don’t know a whole lot about Zappone. But isn’t she a member of Labour and good buddies with Michael McDowell?

Not sure if she was an actual member of the LP or just close to them but an independent Seanad nominee who started voting against the govt early on. Some talk at one point she might become SD.

It seems like she was at some point.

I can’t say anything bad about her but I’ll be suspicious of somebody Gilmore got into the Seanad and who describes McDowell as a friend.

I’m getting a 404 Error with that link, Ivorthorne.

Whatever was there has been taken down. I’ve seen a couple of screenshots going around Twitter. The wayback machine does not seem to be working but you get some details from what was on the page if you google it.

Does the Labour Party normally have pages for non-members?

I don’t actually know if she was in Labour or not. There were leaflets produced by Dublin Says No saying that she was. She would be left of centre and through her work in Jobstown saw the horrors that some of the government cuts did to ordinary people.
As for McDowell I’m pretty sure she has made friends with various people through her life here. She was lucky that she had him as despite what many think of his politics he was able to front up to the massive legal army FG had brought along. I don’t know how well they know each other but McDowell was one never to shun the limelight.
I think she is a welcome addition to the Dail.
Incidentally McDowells son was Lucindas campaign manager.

She seems to have been in negotiations with them at some point and up to relatively recently. Given the material that used to be on the Labour site, it seems likely that she was the one who pulled the plug (or Labour just have a terrible webmaster)..One would hope that was because of opposition to austerity but you would have to wonder if it was related to austerity.

Interesting to see that McDowell’s son was Lucinda’s manager. It seems he modelled the campaign on the last one the PDs conducted.

Found an archive of her page on the LP website:

Doesn’t explicitly say anywhere that she was an LP member; as far as I can recall she was an independent senator from the outset, albeit nominated by the Taoiseach on Gilmore’s recommendation.
