This is pretty great. Mentioned them today in the post on the Wake and have loved them in all their various iterations since 1981 or so. They’re actually close to my favourite group (though there’s a fair number of others who would be in contention, and all their offshoots have cost me money and time, both well spent. Seen them live three times, once on a semi-acoustic tour with just vocalist Steve Kilbey and one of their guitarists, Marty Willson-Piper, once in Vicar Street in the early 2000s and once in the Mean Fiddler in the mid 2000s.
That they continue to release albums is in its own way a minor miracle and testament to a considerable work ethic. They’ve lost Marty Willson-Piper in recent years and gained a former member of Powderfinger. Always liked MWP too, but quality control remains high. They’ve never quite taken off as perhaps they should, their most well known track – Under the Milky Way – providing a college radio hit in 1988 but hardly troubling the charts before or since. But that, for those that like them, means little or nothing.
