One of my favourite Gruff moments was when he appeared on a Newsnight special for the referendum on Welsh devolution with MPs from Labour, Plaid Cymru and the Tories and spent most of the programme insulting the politicians. He seemed to be mildly stoned for the whole thing but maybe he just comes across that way all the time. Sadly it was before Youtube so there doesn’t seem to be any record of it online.

He’s a good guy, isn’t he? And I like the way he’s so honest about stuff – he doesn’t pretend there’s no down side to things.

A couple of years ago, one of my friends said ‘did you hear, Gruff has a new Neon Neon album coming out soon, it’s going to be a concept album about a left-wing Italian publisher’. I said ‘who, Feltrinelli?’ He had to sigh and say ‘only you would actually know the guy’s name’.

Gotta love the Gruff – you forget just how much ‘being in Europe’ – like we were never in Europe before! – has opened up people’s horizons.
He could have been a damn sight more ambivalent however.
