The Left and The Assembly Elections May 3, 2016

Have talked to a few people from Belfast and Derry who think PBP are in with a great chance of winning two seats in The Assembly Elections. Interestingly too I gather that there is all sorts of underhand tactics from both sides and that SF are fairly spooked by the prospect of Gerry Carroll taking a seat. A piece on Carroll from The Belfast Telegraph

We also have this….

Asked about the left wing challenge to Sinn Féin in the coming Northern elections, Gerry Adams defended himself with a blatant lie. People Before Profit were, he said, a ‘two nations’ party.

So as well as in The Republic ,Sinn Fein seem vulnerable to The Left in certain areas in Northern Ireland. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out.
As for other Left candidates (and I may have missed some)

PBP are fielding three candidates
Eamonn McCann -Foyle
Fiona Nic Fhearghais -North Belfast
Gerry Carroll – West Belfast

The Workers’ Party are fielding four Candidates
Conor Campbell – West Belfast
Lily Kerr – South Belfast
Hugh Scullion – Mid Ulster
Gemma Weir – North Belfast

Cross-community Labour Alternative are fielding three candidates
Countney Robinson -East Belfast
Sean Burns – South Belfast
Conor Sheridan – East Antrim

Also of note is The Northern Ireland Labour Representation Committee which are fielding 8 candidates. These are Labour Party members running under this banner as the Labour Party NEC had refused to allow candidates to stand under the Labour Party name.
Outside of the Left, a few others of note include Fianna Fail member Martin McAllister running as an Independent in Newry and Armagh. I gather FF plan to run in Northern Elections soon, so this may indicate their potential. CISTA (Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol) are running four candidates.

SP not running anyone? Or is ‘Cross-community Labour Alternative’ their front?

Yes as far as I’m aware SP are ‘Cross-Community Labour Alternative’. I’m told that in their material they highlight the LABOUR word and use the same colour scheme.. kind of trying to piggy back on the Corbyn effect.

Yes. Read the website of Socialist Party (N. I.-you couldn’t make it up!)
“PBP has a perceived softness towards nationalism”-SP(NI)

Neither PBP/SWP nor CCLA/SP mention anything about Connollys aspiration to united 32-county Workers Republic
I will leave a full analysis until after the election.

They have posters around saying ‘Don’t vote for dinosaurs’ and calling for marriage equality and the right to choose, so sounds like they’re aiming for a broader young liberal vote.

Took my a while to place them as SP. I wonder will there be confusion with the Labour Representation group? They are competing at least in East Belfast.

Impressive group of young people on that facebook page. Great to see. Good luck to them.

“so sounds like they’re aiming for a broader young liberal vote.”
Isn’t that the case with most of the ‘far left’ these days? Focussing on social issues (Repeal the Eighth etc)? But not so much on socialist economy?

True. And actually there’s plenty of reference to anti-austerity in their leaflets. Thought the emphasis on ‘Labour’ and liberal issues looked like more than the usual amount of avoiding the word ‘socialism’ though.

Either way, as you say, good luck to them.

PBP would not be two nationist as far as I am concerned.I marched alongside them a week ago in the reclaim the vision demo. The SWP to which they are aligned took part in every major SF demo during the 80’s and 90’s.When Gerry Carroll is elected he will find himself in an awkward position should any incident take place and his position on policing is asked. Some of his followers would be post troubles student types, others would be disillusioned SDLP types while others would be dissident types who would vote for him to spite SF. Keeping all these strands happy will prove difficult.

Roddy, “post-troubles student types”- can you elaborate a bit more of the sort of politics they have?

There is a new generation ( some of whom would be from SF families) who never experienced the troubles nor the sort of comraderie that existed in communities with extraordinary high numbers of people in jail for instance. They will latch onto anything “trendy” or what they see as”anti establishment”.

Éirígí. Whatever happened to them? Didn’t they get several thousand votes in an election in west Belfast a few years back? How come they are not standing now?

As far as I know they only contest Local Elections as they don’t recognise Storming or Westminster .

they’re only standing in local elections, not for Stormont and Dail
