Optimism issues? May 5, 2016

It’s  a busy day what with elections in the North, in the UK and so on. Meanwhile in the state what’s going on? Well, what a broad range of Independents are in the mix in relation to government formation:

Discussions between Fine Gael and the Independents concluded with no agreement on Wednesday.

The two sides ended discussions after 10.30pm with further meetings planned for Thursday.

The five rural TDs, the Independent Alliance, Maureen O’Sullivan and Michael Healy-Rae will be presented with a Programme for Government on Thursday morning.

One Healy-Rae is overboard or so it would seem and while yesterday’s comments on climate change were – erm – predictable, he’s an astute character and if he feels it is better to be out…

Meanwhile is Katherine Zappone still involved?

Perhaps, we should consider Danny boy’s comments on climate change as a milder form of the similarly newly elected Oliver Flanagan’s comments on the Jews.

Presumably Zappone isn’t mentioned in that story because she’s already firmly ensconced inside the FG tent. It’ll be Ms Zappone, Minister for Something Liberal, shortly.
A lot of the finer detail now will be about bums on cabinet seats. Expect Finian McGrath as junior health minister for disability services. And that chap who got Ming’s seat in Roscommon as Minister for Which Bogs to Dig and Where to Put the Windmills.
