Reading this this morning about the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff was useful. Rousseff and the Brazilian Workers Party are far from unproblematic (though the thought strikes it is probably as a formation as far left as one can imagine in power in that state for the foreseeable and Rousseff’s own history is indicative of the political space there). But the sense of a stitch-up – albeit one in which Rousseff and the WP’s actions haven’t helped, has been strong. And the manner in which even now Brazilian politics is inflected by the military dictatorship is chilling in some respects.
