Overcrowded trains in the UK? May 11, 2016

Trains can’t be upgraded to double deckers – that would require massive investment. Nor can more trains be run due to the nature of the railway system and again to change that would require massive investment.

Well here’s a suggestion from a public consultation about the issue.

“Bidders will be asked to consider innovative solutions to address capacity issues such as changing the balance of first and standard class provision on carriages or by encouraging more passengers to travel at quieter times where they have the option to do so,” it states.

Amazing! Who’d have thought of it?

I used to quite like that Chiltern, the company I travel on most often, didn’t have first class. They’ve been putting a fair bit of money into lengthening station platforms so they can run longer trains to cope with ever growing demand……..and then add ‘business class’. So the same 5 carriages are as packed as ever and the sixth is virtually empty.

I hear upgrading the nuclear arsenal requires tremendous investment. Perhaps opponents should point that fatal flaw out to the govt?
