Trump and Biden June 3, 2016

From RTÉ this morning. Truly we are blessed!

The Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump has announced that he will visit Ireland later this month, at the same time that US Vice President Joe Biden is also due to be in the country.

And:

The announcement comes just days after Taoiseach Enda Kenny described some of Mr Trump’s remarks as “racist and dangerous”.

…how this is handled by the government  – the compare and contrast in terms of treatment – will be most entertaining one has to suspect.

I suspect the government might play hardball on this; given that Martin will be pretending to be all left-wing and that Biden is here at the same time, Trump may well be effectively cold-shouldered – unlike last time. The local damage to a vulnerable administration would be too great if they’re seen to pander. Even with a relatively sane GOP nominee, public opinion in Ireland is overwhelmingly Democratic leaning, so no danger in appearing partisan. Although I imagine the DFA mandarins might have a different view?

It’s clear the Trumps advisors see significant prospects among Irish-Americans.
