Fresh from the 1:1 result of the Ireland Sweden game what is this sad news that greets me as I scan the news media?
Eddie Hobbs has left Renua, the political party he helped found last year.
In a statement, Mr Hobbs said that after the party’s rejection in the General Election and in the leadership vacuum that had been created he had worked hard to bring the party to the point of accepting that it needed to reposition as a liberal democrat party and had completed his objective.
He added that whether the party can reposition itself now “depends on the next leadership and how much Rome is still left in RENUA”.
Huh?

It seems like right wing parties always set out to prove Eddie’s near namesake’s dictum about life being ‘the war of all against all’.
As well as being just nasty brutish and short.

A Liberal Democrat party? What is that? What sort of economics, what sort of social distribution of socio-economic resources? What kind of taxation of personal and corporate incomes? What kind of welfare system? With ‘Rome’ removed (by which is meant Catholic social teaching – about distributist [G.K. Chesterton etc.] policies and family values among other things) what moral framework will guide the renua-ed party post-EdHobbes?
I guess that the renua-ed party is going to think and act Libertarian, not liberal. An individualist, enterprise society party. I guess it won’t win many populist votes from the FF-FG centrist voters, who don’t consider themselves to be on the right or the left but somewhere in the dead center.

That sounds right . Perhaps that party would be happier there? It’s their comfort zone after all and then they can complain the Irish people mostly ignore them.

The types of people who join nasty parties like RENUA are looking for a way to ERNUA tidy little pension.
No ERNUA, no RENUA.
Also, the state funding won by RENUA is similar to that of PBP or the Greens. For those small activist parties the low 6 figures is a godsend; for RENUA types like Hobbs it’s pocket change.

I passed some FDP canvassers (same explicit neoliberal territory – also no longer in government, their nostrums having been internalised by larger parties) in the street the other day and remarked to them that this wasn’t 1985 and perhaps it was time for them to learn to sing another song.
I was greeted with blank bewilderment.
I guess the ‘values of the market’ are timeless and not subject to historical context.

Know a few people who had not been involved in politics prior to Renua. From talking to them Hobbs was very active with the membership. I also got the impression that many people were delighted to be chatting at meetings and workshops with Hobbs. … he had a kind of right wing stardust to sprinkle on his loyal admirers.
No idea what happens now and how those remaining will carry on. There is public funding there due to them getting over 2% in the election.
Start again before joining up with a post Enda Fine Gael?

Not sure but those I know in Renua wouldn’t be particularly religious and would be fairly liberal.

I’ve been racking my brains, between looking at televised football matches, about how the residual members of RENUA might re-name and revamp the image, if not the policy content, of the party that the Irish electorate so shamelessly turned its back on recently.
