I was watching it on ITV with Andy Townsend as co-commentator and he’s given up even the pretence of being irish. So great to see a team, almost all of whom grew up in Ireland, and half of them having played in the LoI, do what they did.

Yeah, there is something likeable about this ROI team- They come across in interviews as…just sound. Great win. Lá dár saol.

Some prick in the Irish Times recently listed the northerners in the squad among “foreign born players”!

On the other hand, the manager of Cork City, when they were drawn against Linfield in this year’s Europa League qualifiers, said he was glad they didn’t have to leave the country.

Yep – I enjoyed that last night – what they lacked in skill they made up in hard graft, optimism and willingness to take risks.

Italy just didn’t seem to get anything together but still credit to Ireland – I’d say they could give France a fright.

On a side notes Kurds liked the result because Turkey got knocked out.

The Hungary – Portugal match was the best I’ve seen so far, though.

But what about Iceland? – and even smaller outfit. Them beating England would be a sight to behold.

And why being Irish is always more fun than being English who seem to delight in draining all the joy from the game:

Compare and contrast Irish fans’ treatment of Sonia O’Sullivan in her last Olympics when she was completely out of the race but finished it and got a cheer from the fans as she passed them, and the way English media treated Paula Radcliffe.

Dubs v Meath put back to 6.35. The stroll to Croker , hopefully following defeat for les garçons en bleu over there, will clear the head nicely .

From cheering for The Boys in Green against the Boys in Blue in the afternoon to cheering for the Boys in Blue against the Boys in Green in the evening 🙂

Coybig in afternoon, Coybib in the eveningtime- manners put on the French aristos and the Royals cut down to size- here’s hoping for a lovely double.

extremely enjoying watching the England meltdown in the ITV studio. They can’t help patronising Iceland despite the fact THEY ARE WINNING!

btw, didn’t see it but I hear that NI fans on saturday we’re chanting at Wales: ‘We voted remain, we voted remain, we’re not stupid, we voted remain’

The Icelandic fans’ war cry chant is scary – makes me want to get into a round tower and pull up the ladder

‘The England players have signed a petition asking for them to be reinstated to the Euros as they didn’t understand the consequences of conceding goals at the tournament.

[I’ll get me coat]’

Guardian comment. Give them their due, they do irony in defeat quite well. Which is just as well.

It was a thing of beauty. Ian Wright coming into his own as a state-of-the-nation commentator. ‘It reminded me of Space Jam, with the monsters …’ We had to close the window so our English neighbours wouldn’t hear us cheering. I had said in the pub on Friday night that the very thing to stop a resurgence of English nationalism would be an Iceland victory on Monday but I didn’t think it would actually happen.
