Buran – the Soviet Shuttle June 25, 2016

Posted by WorldbyStorm in Uncategorized.

Here’s a piece on the Soviet shuttle Buran, which distinguished itself on its single flight into orbit by being unmanned and automatically controlled throughout. This was a feature that if I recall correctly wasn’t added to the US Shuttle until the 1990s.

The piece above suggests that in many respects Buran was a better shuttle. It certainly was less complex, and in these matters that can indeed be a good thing. The complexity of the US shuttle was one of the major problems in preventing it becoming a genuine workhorse in space. A pity Buran never saw proper operations.

And Energia, as a friend reminded me, was the second most powerful rocket after the Saturn 5.

The Soviets were damn fine rocket engineers.
