An all-island forum on Brexit? July 4, 2016

RTÉ reports that:

Taoiseach Enda Kenny is developing the concept of an all-island forum to work on issues following the decision by the UK to leave the European Union.

On 23 June 52% of voters in the UK backed a British exit from the EU.

Minister for Health Simon Harris explained the concept of the new forum on RTÉ’s The Week in Politics saying it will see groups, both north and south, work on issues of mutual interest in light of the Brexit vote.

The areas of mutual interest cover trade, investment and health, Mr Harris said.

And, presumably not entirely coincidentally the North South Ministerial Council is meeting tomorrow.

Question is, who will come to the forum? Would the UUP turn up? Doesn’t seem likely the DUP would. And given that it’s at the instigation of the RoI government how does that play?

is this the the GFA’s North/South Consultative Forum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North/South_Consultative_Forum or just something event specific or something that could eventual morph into that

Plan scrapped already according to indo.ie – “Taoiseach forced to scrap plans for North-South ‘All-Ireland forum’ to deal with Brexit”.
Story says that it was scrapped cos Arlene said no.
My interpretation is this was clever move by Dept of Foreign Affairs as follows: Get Taoiseach to suggest this Forum without first consulting Arlene agus a cairde. This gives Arlene the perfect opp to publicly reject and thus keep her cairde happy. But Arlene also (as the Indo story indicates she has) can then agree to strong ongoing engagement on the issue through the already-existing GFA structures.
Well done all.

It does, doesn’t it? Mostly because I can’t see Enda having the courage to suggest it, or the sophistication to play the Us like that.

A press statement issued by Kenny’s department ahead of a meeting of the North-South Ministerial Council said: “The taoiseach will raise the possibility of developing an all-island forum with the support of political parties, North and South, to discuss the joint challenges arising from the UK decision.” http://www.irishcentral.com/opinion/others/Enda-Kenny-under-pressure-to-step-down-after-major-misjudgments.html then bith Harris and Murphy raised it on RTE that weekend, a very strange thing that Arlene response got a lot of reportage but I didn’t hear any give out about specifically except for Deasy

I think if a lot of unionists were on the Titanic, they would refuse to share a lifeboat with nationalists
