From Teresa May’s speech today:
Because not everybody knows this but the full title of my party is the Conservative and Unionist party and that word unionist is very important to me.
It means we believe in the union, the precious, precious bond between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – but it means something else that is just as important.
It means we believe in a union not just between the nations of the United Kingdom but between all of our citizens – every one of us – whoever we are and wherever we’re from.

Eh? Who’s this ‘we’ there?
Only a tiny group of people in the owning and ruling classes benefit from the corporate tax arbitrage, regardless of a weak national identification.
‘We’ – the global working class – have taxes withheld from governments that are (theoretically) answerable to us, that could have been spent on services and infrastructure.
So less of the we in this context, if you don’t mind.

Much sturm und drang over the use of a pronoun in place of a term such as “the Irish state”.
Surely as an Irish citizen such a usage would not be strange nor taken as an endorsement of any attribute of the Irish state?

Cabinet reshuffle gives FO, International Trade and Secretary of Exiting the EU to leave folks (Johnson, Fox, Davis respectively). There’s some glee at the prospect of Johnson now having to deal with the rest of the world.

I find the IT site a reliable source of amusement/ old bloke outrage at growing illiteracy, especially in the middle of the night, when they leave Killian or Sorcha, the interns, in charge.
Tonight they have ‘Theresa May Makes Boris Johnson Foreign Secretary’; as with the old joke about mothers and homosexuals, do you think if I gave her the wool, she’d make me one too?

SOS,when Villiers was appointed I said that “Villiers” to me meant a two stroke motor bike engine with a propensity to revv it’s head off without really going anywhere.Teresa made such an impression that the 197cc engine in my shed will still be the only thing that springs to mind when her surname comes up!

Roddy, you got a Villiers engine? Cool. In a motorbike? What is it? Lots of noise and clouds of blue smoke, what’s not to like? (BSA Bantam circa 1950s). Sadly all I have is an incredibly noisy strimmer to satisfy those cravings now.

Further thoughts on that speech of the new PM’s “we believe in a union not just between the nations of the United Kingdom”
Did/does it ever cross her mind that 50%odd (and rising) of the people in NI and Scotland do not believe in that Union and do not want it? And do not want the PM’s belief thrust upon them?

I took that as a multifactorial piece of pandering.
* Display of confidence and strength for international community, markets.
* Refute the obvious that Scotland is gone unless Brexit is negated.
* Sop to Unionism (Arlene got her Privvy Council nod this week too) – which probably means a betrayal of some sort, likely the hard border will be the seas & channel and the border in Ireland will be left the same.
* Red meat for the nativists and Ukipers.

Fergus ,the engine is actually a 196 villiers in (wait for it) a 1931 Coventry Eagle which I bought in 1988 .I got the engine to run at that time and the whole bike is sitting in the shed ever since.I am going to fully restore her and put her on the road when I retire in about ten years time!

The M1 was built as far as Dungannon to shorten Basil ( “I would’nt have one about the place”) Brook’s journey home from Stormont to Fermanagh.

I love explaining to visitors to the country how the M1 leaves Dublin heading for Belfast, and the M1 Leaves Belfast heading to Dublin, but that they are not the same M1 and they don’t meet.
It adds extra confusion that the Belfast Rd claims to be heading to the ‘west,’ by which it seems to mean Fermanagh!
I’ve missed that turn so often, though, that its not quite as funny as it once was…
