That FF/FG ‘temporary little arrangement’ August 2, 2016

UTV’s Mary Regan made a most useful assessment of sentiment in FF in regard to this ‘temporary little arrangement’ of a coalition propped up by them in the SBP a week or so ago. She wrote:

The benefits that FF foresaw in the arrangement – building on gains made in the election, sharing off criticism over its handling of the crash – are all coming to pass. It is also taking the time to build its next election war chest…and will make it worth holding off [on an election] until late spring or Summer.

That second to me seems to be the key issue. The election saw a return of apostate votes to FF. It’s hardly unreasonable to suggest that the next will see that dynamic increase yet more. And Martin and FF have played it very cleverly in that respect. Worth noting that whatever the overall balance between them, although the polls see FG staying more or less at their current level it is FF that is increasing support. That right of centre area is consolidating.

As to whether they wait until next year for an election – and this dovetails with thoughts here yesterday, well, they may likely ask themselves what is the rush (as well as being keen not have their fingerprints on said collapse)?

Such is the disarray on display in the minority government, FF now believes it is perfectly capable of collapsing itself without their help.

She concludes by suggesting that in regard to restoring the flagging spirits and fortunes of the government:

…for now a summertime breather will do…

I’m sure there’s many in government who hope that is the case.
