Special interests August 11, 2016

I love the stuff from the CIF. Take this from them today:

[The Construction Industry Federation] argues the Government must renew “extensive investment” in infrastructure so the Republic can continue to compete internationally for jobs.
“An increase of €1 billion in construction spending yields 10,000 new construction jobs,” the CIF says.

It’s not that they’re wrong, far from it in this instance. Just how often are they described by right wing columnists and commentators as a special interest group, or one with a vested interest?

A billion divided by ten thousand gives e100,000 cost per temporary job.

Seems more efficient to just employ them directly for building, no?

Except much of the cost of infrastructure work is spent on equipment. There is nothing wrong with hiring private companies who have the equipment and experience to do the work. i.e. Getting more bang for the buck. And all construction jobs are temporary.
