Jerry Doyle 1956-2016 September 3, 2016

I was sorry to hear that Jerry Doyle, who played Michael Garibaldi on Babylon 5, died in late July at the age of 60. He was, politically, right-libertarian and fairly dismal with it, – winding up as a right-wing radio host, and yet, and yet, he was perfect in the role of Garibaldi and came across as a provocative, irritating and entertaining character at Cons. Interesting to see the very generous tributes from his colleagues on B5 who would have in the main been vastly more liberal than he.

I was going to write a wee post to note his passing at the time but the libertarian stuff put me off. I had come across it a few years ago when he was at his worse. Instead I just tweeted out J. Michael Straczynski’s eulogy which seemed a very fair tribute to the man behind the persona. Sad to see that the rumours of his revived alcoholism were true. Politics aside folk seemed genuinely fond of him.

A hard man to love politically, wasn’t he? But fair enough on a personal level. Funny too with it.

Strange to think that he was being sold as the next Bruce Willis early on in his career. His conservative “news” website, Epic Times, seems to have died with him which is kinda poignant. Hoping to get my hands on a copy of the CNN behind the scenes documentary through a friend. Well the commentary disc with Doyle and Claudia Christian which is apparently a fun watch.

That would be good. I always enjoy seeing her stuff at cons on youtube.

Yeah, I think that sank him a bit the Willis connection. He was a good actor for certain roles in his own right.

Jesus, the B5 curse strikes again. Even some of the surviving cast members have ‘joked’ about it.
