Am I wrong to think a consensus has emerged for Cré na Cille by Máirtín Ó Cadhain. English translations available?
Would it be okay then to have the runner up which appears to be Geoff Eley’s work as suggested by lcox and seconded by GW as the second volume?
Finally BenMadigan noted that as this would be online we wouldn’t have the meet IRL aspect. Well, perhaps we could closer in to Christmas, some evening, at least for those in Dublin?

never read this book – willing to give it a go. Is that the one where the dead and buried in the churchyard spring back to life to continue bad-mouthing friends and neighbours?

Think I’ll go for the Titley translation – the following of Irish grammatical forms in the other seems a bit stagey and academic. But that’s a matter of taste, I suppose.

I was asking about a freely available download. I think this point is important if we want to include as many people in discussions as possible, particularly if this book club initiative takes off.
If we don’t – then I’ll say no more .
I agree translations are a tricky issue and can understand why you think ” the following of Irish grammatical forms in the other seems a bit stagey and academic”.
This type of translation (from whatever language into whatever second language) risks alienating some readers – as indeed appears to have happened with you.

It’s simple. We all read the book and exchange views on it. I posit that elements of it prove that Ó Cadhain was leaning towards a two-nationist take on the national question. Roddy disagrees. And so on and on.

I went into An Siopa Leabhar on Harcourt St. Had a look at the original Cré na Cille and the Titley translation The Dirty Dust. Bought the translation. Twenty euros. It’s a start in anyway. I’ll keep yis posted if I actually start reading the thing.

I’ve had some coffee so careful now.
Seeing as we’ve got a CLR Book Club and there does be the odd CLR gathering in Dublin, what about, in the medium term like, a CLR Road Trip?
I nominate a visit to comrade Gewerkschaftler in Berlin as the first destination. An extended weekend in 2017. What say yis?

Excellent idea. I haven’t been to Berlin since there were two of them. Although after my disappointing showing last Christmas, I wouldn’t be relying on me.

My Titley translation is ‘on the way’ – but how would ‘an Interlude’ per week seem as a not-to-strenuous pace?
