Dublin Central? September 27, 2016

All politics is local and given that the CLR has at times seemed to operate as an informal Dublin Central blog time to look in once more on the constituency. Anyone have thoughts on how the latest political dynamics impact on the constituency? Does the loss of a TD fro the SDs make their one potential shining light a bit dimmer? How about FF? Any chance they might slip in? What about the current Independent seat held by the tenacious Maureen O’Sullivan? SF? Topping the poll with a potential party leader next time out? And FG and the man with no ambition. So he says.

Looks like it will be a replay of last time out. The same contestants in the ring. O’Sullivan isn’t retiring. Costello of Labour probably will give it one last go.
Like everywhere else maybe, the thing to watch is how well will FF do. As you say, could they sneak in? And at whose expense? Only safe seat is Mary Lou’s. After that it’s between O’Sullivan, Donohoe FG, Fitzpatrick FF and Gannon SD (don’t think the defection of Donnelly from the SDs will make a whit of difference to Gannon’s chances – all politics is local).

I see two seats of the WP here.

I saw 2 seats of the WP the other night. Two oul sticks were sitting on them at a “public” meeting but unfortunately the “public” did’nt turn up!

The sticks are decidedly young in Dublin Central and we’re growing at a reasonable clip. We’ve been working primarily on housing, and currently spending a lot of time with the privitisation of O’Devaney Gardens.

Not sure about 2 seats tho.

I don’t think Gannon is much affected by Donnelly as Joe says.

The local elections are coming up in the not too distant future and may outpace the generals if we don’t have another economic crisis. There we have Niall Ring, Christie Burke and Janice Boylan as the sure seats unless Ring or Burke retire due to age – if Gannon is still not a TD he’ll be the next sure seat. The others are in fierce contention with Fitzpatrick of FF having a decent chance for sure. I think there is space for one harder left candidate than the other fairly soft offers.

Cieran Perry will surely contest again.

Not likely for the local, I expect he’ll stay in Cabra-Finglas.

Ah, well indeed but I should have been clearer in the op that I was discussing the general not the locals.

‘Decidedly young sticks’. What would they be? Twigs? Shoots? Oops, that’s unfortunate. Sorry.

On Roddy’s topic of public meetings. I think it’s an acknowledged fact that it’s harder these days to get people to turn up at meetings than in days of yore. Fair play to the people who organised the meeting that Roddy observed. What was it about, I wonder? I’m sure some members of the public showed up.

There’s posters up in Dublin for two public meetings at the moment. Two great slogans: A public meeting on the bus strike with the slogan ‘All workers need a raise’ and another one with the slogan ‘Rent Controls Now!’. Pithy and to the point. The first one resonated with this worker anyway. Not that I’ll go to the meeting or anything mad like that but…well, fair play to the SP for sticking at it.

It’ll be interesting to see how this is affected by changes in the constituency.

The census shows that Dublin North West and Dublin Central are under-represented.

There seems, according to Adrian Kavanagh, to be an argument for an additional seat in the Dublin north city constituencies.

How would the scenarios discussed above be different if Dublin Central was remade back into a four-seater with some of the Drumcondra parts recently moved into DNW brought back?

As for our friends in the WP, though I’ve been impressed by Eilis Ryan her performance in the General Election was diabolical – hard to imagine a left candidate in Dublin Central beaten by Renua – and I think the locals might be a bit of a challenge.

Yep there could be changes. Could be minor tinkering or could be major. I’ve been bounced back and forth between the two constituencies for the past 25 years. SLF wrote a song about it – Living at the edge of the world.

‘her performance in the General Election was diabolical’. I don’t know you Jonah but I’m not sure that came across the way you meant it. I’d say the WP’s vote at the last election was very poor (I wouldn’t want to be blaming the devil on it!) but I’d say that was down to all kinds of factors – starting from a very low base; PbP being the far left nomme du jour in that constituency in that election; history (recent and not so recent); very crowded field; the irredentist nationalism ingrained in the people of Dublin Central (ok, only joking on that one) and so on. I doubt very much that it had anything at all to do with the candidate’s performance.

” PbP being the far left nomme du jour in that constituency in that election;”

You mean Diana O’Dwyer of AAA? She didn’t do amazingly better if I recall – also an excellent candidate.
Crowded field, definitely; I voted 1-5 for candidates I’d be quite happy to be represented by – a rare luxury.

You’re right of course. I was thinking of a PbP chap who stood in the locals in Cabra Glasnevin last time (I think!). Can’t recall now whether he/PbP stood in DC in the general. Memory fails but I think the AAA candidate got a bit more than twice as many votes as the WP candidate in DC last time out – c700 for AAA and c300 for WP, was it?

Think you’re right with the figures. I remember working out that with perfect transfers, the very broad left could have taken all three seats.

Nearly spot on there Joe, 721 for O’Dwyer and 303 for Ryan. They’d probably have done a bit better than that if O’Sullivan and Perry weren’t in the field.

I have a vague memory of dublin central on the vincent browne show where he said it was the 9th richest constituency in the state!!! I know it has been gentrified, or more correctly commodified, but if the figure is true that’s some change in such a quick time, isn’t it?

Please NO. There’s been pointless throwing about of allegations about people in Dublin Central on here before. It’s not what this site is about, imho.
So if stuff is to come out about anyone, let it come out somewhere else, not on here please.

No intention of putting it on here at least till its publically out somewhere else with deeper pockets. But as SOS says there are rumours..

Thought the best line in the Phoenix article was “my politics hadn’t fully formed” at the time of the locals, now what does that mean……….
