Seeing as the US situation was mentioned last night…
This is an interesting one, from the Guardian this week…
In a speech this morning Damian Green, the work and pensions secretary, announced that jobseekers who are homeless or suffer from a mental health condition will now be able to access hardship payments immediately if they receive a benefit sanction.
This came in a wide-ranging speech in which Green also set out some general thoughts on the future of welfare. The most interesting passage came when he said he wanted a “welfare system”, not just a “welfare state”, because the government should not be the sole provider of welfare. He told the Reform thinktank.A welfare state is not enough—we need a welfare system, involving many players – health professionals, employers large and small, a whole range of voluntary organisations …
A welfare state, is not enough for today’s world. What we need is an entire system of welfare.
The government is a necessary, but not sufficient provider of welfare. It can, and does, act as the guarantor of fairness within the welfare system to set the rules. It can also provide the backbone of the assistance system through more than 700 Jobcentre Plus Offices.
What it must not try to do is assume that it can provide all the help necessary. To achieve a successful welfare system in the 21st century you need to give more decision-making power to individuals…
By the way, is it just me or does John McDonnell in particular seem an increasingly impressive figure? I’ve got some admiration for how he is moving forward. It’s heartening to see the Corbyn team and Corbyn himself growing into their roles.

Someone pointed out that Labour’s poll ratings are starting to creep upwards and the Tories to gradually reduce directly related to the (for now) end of the internal Labour civil war. Although I see this morning that Keir Starmer has sharply criticised McDonnell over the latter’s enthusiasm for Brexit. Teresa May is being exposed nearly every day as totally out of her depth – I think a UK general election, if it happens soon, will be a very close run thing. Hopefully, the utter failure of Clinton to beat a freak like Trump will have shut up idiots like Owen Smith, Chuka Umuna, Tristram Hunt who can see that ‘elections are won from the centre’ is anachronistic at this juncture.

Where are Labour’s poll ratings creeping up? Asked not as a passive-aggressive rhetorical question, in case that’s how it reads, but in a spirit of hopefulness that you might have information I don’t have! The latest has them trailing the Tories by 14%…?

At a local level, i was a CLP meeting here last night, and even the people who have been fighting the good fight for years are beginning to get excited at the idea that a town that has been Tory for ever might slip from their grasp.

The IT published an article by me some time ago that said Corbyn could become the PM of the UK and NI. With over 3,000 members if the LP in Northern Ireland already, there are probably more members in it in Ireland than the Irish Labour Party whose ex leader Pat Rabbitte attacked Corbyn. Nothing is guaranteed in politics, but if Corbyn is elected PM, maybe it might suggest to the Labour Party that their future lies in being part the left as well. They could start by supporting the Neutrality Bill which is being debated in the Dail next week.

Many of these 3000 are pretending to back Corbyn in the hope that if they suck up to him,he will allow them to stand “official” Labour candidates.The so called “Labour NI could’nt even muster 3000 votes in the whole of the North last May.Mrs Liam Clarke is their de facto leader and a”Corbinista” she is not !

John McDonnell, M.P. along with Benn and Corbyn, but especially Financial Reporter Phillip Inman of The Guardian were the only British establishment figures willing to listen to us when we sought justice for Patrick Cullinane. Cullinane (London ex-Co. Limerick) died a few days ago after seeking justice unavailingly for decades. The Inland Revenue fabricated a lien against him for “unpaid taxes,” grabbed his house, evicted him from it, and sold it, keeping the entire proceeds. Other Inland Revenue employes provided Cullinane with evidence that the claim was false; but the IR criminals outranked its honest employees.
John McDonnell was a light amidst the squalor of gov’t crime. Irish Ambassador Barrington at the time, and London’s Irish newspapers all proved corrupt.

I caught a whiff of Cullinane’s antisemitism. It revealed a deplorable lack of education and must have undermined his pursuit of justice. But it doesn’t diminish the fact that criminals within the IR robbed him of his house based upon a claim proven false by others within the IR. It speaks for itself that Cullinane, in death, is beset by an exposer of his main (sole?) weakness instead of an advocate of justice.
As to the 5.16 millions murdered in 1945-1850 Ireland, obviously “Ireland’s” academic establishment cannot agree; not while concealing the fact that it was a genocide perpetrated by more than half of Britain’s army; 67 regiments of its 130 regiment total. An honest professor (of history) nearly lost his livelihood in Ireland when his factual work received no peer review. .
The murder toll will never be precisely known; so it is revealing that my array of the genocide’s other components, all indisputable and all proving genocide, are ignored by this attacker.
A far more comprehensive accounting of the murder toll is Chapter 6 in my “Ireland 1845-1850: the Perfect Holocaust, and Who Kept it ‘Perfect’.” Other chapters complete the case of genocide. For example, It also shows all British army deployments to, from, or within Ireland from the end of 1944 to the end of 1850. Thus one can learn which regiment starved which Irish district, when, during that period.

Joel Mokyr estimated a range of between 1.1 million and 1.5 million, are you suggesting that these numbers can’t be trusted on the grounds that Mokyr is part of a conspiracy of Ireland’s academic establishment, of which he isn’t a part, to suppress the true death toll? In fact going further how could a conspiracy of that scale survive over such a long period of time, and who indeed are the conspirators? Evidence please.
Why would I bother commenting on your other ‘indisputable’ facts when there when the statistics proved jar with those available from other sources, the inflating of the 1841 census by 2.7 million without providing verifiable evidence for why is still without tangible answer.

It is possible to learn the facts. The book is available in Dublin; its second and third printings were there. Its material is originally sourced; not regurgitations of regurgitations. But I waste time on you. Patrick Cullinane, who was robbed with impunity by Britain’s IR, fought valiantly for many years for justice, mostly with little support. He did seem to be going under, mentally, due to the stress of injustice. I had noticed Cullinane’s occasional descent into antisemitism; but it takes a special kind of ghoul to attempt to characterize Cullinane by his rare, worst, utterances. And the anonymous Liberius goes so far as to spew his “antisemitism” smear onto me, a decade-long member of Jewish Voice For Peace.

You know when I’m making my case on CLR I’ve frequently gone to the trouble of producing quotes and links which back up my claims, so at the very least I would expect something similar from somebody making claims about census numbers and estimated death tolls to do the same; an issue frankly of greater weight than many of the arcane topics often up for debate. So go on and give us some of this sourced information that will back up your claims.
Rare or not they are still virulently anti-Semitic positions he took, that is not something to be taken lightly. It’s also something that you can’t wriggle out of by trying to besmirch my reputation with the notion that I’m suggesting that you are anti-Semitic, I’m not, I’m merely suggesting that defending somebody with those views, vintage anti-Semitic slurs, is a quite irregular for somebody posting on CLR.
Similarly no amount of faux ‘moral superiority’ centred around your choice to plaster the internet with your name and my choice to keep my privacy intact by adopting a pseudonym will invalidate the criticisms I’ve made. I’ve little doubt that CLR’s commenters and readers will, even if they don’t agree with many of my political positions, recognise and attest to the veracity and seriousness with which I comment here.

Cullinane, London ex-Limerick, was robbed of his house by individuals within the Inland Revenue. Decent English individuals including M.P.s McDonnell, Benn, and Corbyn proved helpful. IR employes provided proof that the IR claim was fraudulent. Guardian newspaper Financial Reporter Phillip Inman wrote a series championing Cullinane. With the passage of time, with justice unavailable to him, Cullinane, began to manifest signs of mental disorder. It caused me to dedicate less, instead of what should have been more, time to his cause.
Cullinane is gone now; while a ghoul not only smears his memory, but smears me for trying to gain a modicum of justice for him. The ghoul’s pretext is that justice ought not be pursued for a person exhibiting mental disorder. Frighteningly evil.

It’s highly insulting to people with mental health problems to write off anti-Semitic opinions in that manner as most people with mental health problems don’t spew content suggesting Jews control the media and the courts across the internet. Besides, the primary contention I raised in my initial comment was about the wonky statistics on your website, something you’ve failed to provide evidence for. I still await the reason why the figures for the 1841 census were inflated by 2.7 million, and consequently why the death toll figures are between three and five times those provided by other sources.

I’m not sure supporting Cullinane is the only problem with Mr. Fogarty, here’s a quote taken from his website;
That 5.16 million is a long way north of any academic estimates I’ve seen. There is also the fact that the same page says the 1841 census recorded a population of 10,897,449 against the 8,175,124 of other sources, I’d love to hear the evidence for this, though suspect it won’t be forthcoming, at least not in any format other than fag packet standard.

What a cunning attempt to smear! According to “Liberius,” (Why the anonymity?) any support or sympathy for the recently deceased Patrick Cullinane and the fact that the Inland Revenue robbed him of his house, must be interpreted as support for Cullinane’s antisemitic utterances.

You’re perfectly free to champion anti-Semites like Cullinane if you wish, though I suspect most people would find it hard to muster energy to support someone who thought that Jews were actively controlling the media and preventing Christian getting justice in the courts as displaying in this quote from the first link provided by CL.
By the by, pseudonyms aren’t exactly uncommon on the internet, most of CLR’s commenters are pseudonymous.
