Films November 20, 2016

Posted by WorldbyStorm in Uncategorized.

New films out soon include Valerian – always liked the French comic strip the film directed by Jean Luc Besson is based on. Whether live action is the right medium remains to be seen.

Speaking of mediums, the upcoming version of Ghost in the Shell strikes me as pointless given the remarkable original animated film.

Rogue One I steadfastly avoid watching any more trailers.

Anyone seen anything good? I’m away, I hope, to see Doctor Strange this week. And what about new films coming up?

And what about this? A classic in the making obviously.

Saw the new “magnificent seven” a few weeks ago with Denzil Washington taking over from Yul Bryner. Not bad and they even finished up with a blast of the original theme tune which has to rate as one of the greatest .Every time I hear it it gives me a mental image of wide open spaces.

I’d wondered about that film. Always liked the original and good cast in the new one. That’s one to watch so! It’s on my list.

Dr Strange is good. It’s a superhero origin movie with similar themes to the original Iron Man but it does enough new things, and takes itself just serious enough to work well.

The visuals are very much Jack Kirby meets Inception. See it in 3d if the format doesn’t annoy you.

Marvel seem to be able to get away with movies like Dr Strange because the individual movies have different tones while still having something of a house style. It also helps that movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant Man have come between it and the more traditional alpha-male superhero movies.

Marvel Studios seems to have started replicating their Marvel TV’s policy of increasing diversity. The next phase seems like it will involve more female and “minority” heros.

Saw it the other day and liked it a lot. A very different tone to most other MCU stuff. And it could easily be standalone. Some great visuals but an actual story that while in a way hackneyed was solid in terms of depicting something at least initially close to reality.

I liked GotG too. And I also weirdly like the way it plays positively with diversity – Mordo and the Ancient One are pretty good ways around previous approaches.
