With Gardai victimising autistics, people with disabilities,women and encouraging physical abuse by criminal gangs, and ex-paramilitary drug gangs, apart from reporting to the UN that Gardai threats to those whose wrists are cut, arms are bruised, bones broken and stabbed should not be able to go out to be victimised?

If we are harassed further and threatened for making complaints against our attackers, and ask for help to be thrown down and affected for life from impact trauma told after investigation that it is “not against rules or regulations” for Gardai to manhandle and “drop” the victims.

Why are the victims persecuted by Gardai while the criminal gangs get encouraged by the lack of willingness of Gardai to engage certain subsections of society whose fundraising and drug dealing and extortion attempts target those who ought to expect Gardai to be sympathetic, not stitched up on contradictory evidence, while a Sínn Fein Councillor attempt to get witnesses and supporters of the victim to disengage. I personally had a call for 45 mins or so on speakerphone so everyone else could here the attempts and bullying to get me of my civic duty in the Patrick Dunne to stand up to the gang who attacked an autistic mother, resulting in her death; the autistic son, having been strangled was dragged through courts while perjury and lies were permitted and when case collapsed and could not proceed, the victim was dumped in the CMH, where the Psychiatrist had bold-faced lied about all autistics (having claimed lack of experience) we are all psychopaths and a danger to society, and made personal allegations of some of us he has not previously had direct contact to be able to give such diagnosis to.

Frau Dr. Merkel has kicked off the long federal election campaign in Germany by predictably mixing a bit of AfDery with the promise of tax cuts.

So you’ve got a further erosion of internationally agreed asylum rights, and the old favourite, banning of full-face veil-wearing.

But when the SPD tries to ape the CDU, people vote for the original. The same, I suspect, will apply to the CDU and the AfD.

Same old same old – the ‘centre’ allowing the agenda to be set by the fascist spectrum.

I hope he’s right in asserting that at in at least one Atlantic island neo-liberal politics is a thing of the past. Certainly Icelandic politics seems to be in a much healthier state than that of the RoI. Or indeed the BRD.

Watched a Pilger doc on “The coming war on China” a few days ago (C4?). Interesting, but all over the place as Pilger often is, probably 4 good docs in there. However he showed a world map with US overseas bases marked on it, interesting. China surrounded and more bases being built. Scary.

Some US politico denied there are any US bases in Oz. Technically correct, as for the UK, they are RAF/RAAF etc bases but with maybe one RAF/RAAF officer and thousands of USAAF personnel. He must be having a larf!

The early 1980s I was 15 or 16. I always remember when I was in the UK having half a thought about the possibility of being caught up directly in a nuclear war. Not that Ireland would be exempt but the sense of immediacy was much greater. And it was pretty bleak.

Read it. It is a very interesting book. The various positions of teh British left regarding SF/IRA and Irish nationalism generally (and republicanism) is interesting. Sadly many LP politicians were relentlessly pro-British imperialism. Further left positions varied a bit. It struck me that a similar study could be done on the more recent “Troubles”.

AA Gill, eh? Let’s not forget him mocking the appearance of women more intelligent than himself. From his review of ‘Pompeii: Life and Death in a Roman Town’: “For someone who looks this closely at the past, it is strange [that Mary Beard, Professor of Classics at Newnham College, Cambridge] hasn’t had a closer look at herself before stepping in front of a camera. Beard coos over corpses’ teeth without apparently noticing she is wearing them. From behind she is 16; from the front, 60. The hair is a disaster, the outfit an embarrassment. This isn’t sexist or beside the point. If you are going to invite yourself into the front rooms of the living, then you need to make an effort.” And from his review of ‘Meet The Romans’: “Mary Beard should be kept away from cameras altogether. She’s this far from being the subject of a Channel 4 dating documentary [The Undateables].”

I think it’s the openess of the interaction that makes her respond like that – as well as perhaps not wanting to say too much ill about someone that has just died – there’s an immediacy about a tweet, and then the anonymity about them that perhaps stings more than a column in a newspaper where more people will be around to find it reprehensible. I’m not saying you’re wrong, just that at this point and in that context she may well find it to be both more generous.

Yes, people seem to have forgotten how objectionable the views of Gill actually were. I recall Gill writting a long defense of Enoch Powell as part of a TV review, saying Britain was wrong to give India independence.

He also mounted several attacks on the BBC Famine drama “The Hanging Gale” ,and saying the Irish had

As an exercise of public diplomacy, it will certainly confirm the assumption of many people around the world that American power is best understood as a raw, neocolonial exercise in securing resources….

What you say is certainly possible, i’m just not convinced. Craig Murray (Link above) seems credible. And Glenn Greenwald makes some good points.

What if those evil Ruskies did hack Clinton emails etc, it wasn’t the russkies who plotted with Clinton against Sanders, it was the DNC. It was the Clintons who ran their Foundation, highly suggestive as it is of them as Wall St shills and bag carriers for the Saudis and others. Nobody forced Clinton to ignore the rust belt. How can Krugman blame the russkies for that. The “New Democrats” have learned nothing from their defeat.

I really can’t take Americans and the allies seriously on this foreign interference and hacking stuff, I think that everything it accuses others of, its done too, particularly when it comes to cyber area as my impresssion is that America is the one with most direct access over that domain but there seemed to be shift after Wikileaks and Snowdens leaks where more of this sutff is being released as if nobody could pretend that weren’t doing this anymore so they might aswell release it, there’s been plenty of leaks like with the DNC emails and audio calls in Eastern Europe (and South America and elsewhere?). The other shift has been the legalising of the mass spying that Snowden complined about.

Not a bad piece. And it makes one excellent point, that such attempts are problematic on their own terms – sure we can be lofty and say everyone is at it and give the mental equivalent of a sigh but if that is the case then logically why complain about one and not the other rather than holding everyone to higher standards? Just re Trump fan club a disappointing phenomenon but no great surprise.

For them, not necessarily for all other Republicans. It will be an interesting test to see whether he’s accepted or not. TBH I’d be surprised if he wasn’t, Trump has a lot of political capital going into this, but then again unpredictable times. A broader point is that these are all Republicans of one stripe or another – where’s the surprise that Trumps picks and potential picks are abysmal?
