Cold and flu’s January 11, 2017

This was mentioned in the IT, a site for those not feeling too hot at this time of the year due to flu and colds. It’s a great idea. I’ve had a chest infection the last three weeks, it’s finally lifting and the question is always whether to go to the doctor. Anyone get the flu vaccine this Autumn? I always forget to get it – which given I had pneumonia a few years back is perhaps unwise.

Great site. Hadn’t heard of it. Caught the cold/flu that’s been going around a few days before Xmas and only shifting it now. Couldn’t take time off work due to a swathe of colleagues going sick and no cover. It’s just dire doing a day or night shift when all you want is your pillow and duvet 🙂

I was in a similar situation. I basically took one day off and abandoned anything but the absolutely necessary – which lost me a fair bit of time on a few projects. That’s part of the problem, being unable to get any time out there’s little space to get the rest necessary to get better quicker.

I have discovered over the yearsthat house confinement is the worst thing to do.Getting out into the cold fresh air seems to lift a cold quicker.

In many cases I’d agree. But if it dips to a certain level beyond a cold then I get fairly careful. After that pneumonia a few years back I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

I get the flu jab annually and (touchwood) am rarely sick. Only downside is that I end up as the nurse. Seems to be a particularly bad dose going around at the minute.

This is the first year for about the last five that I’ve not had a flu jab*, only had light cold so far, although I’ve had contact with someone with this one doing the rounds today, so… Hold that space.
* I’m not of the age where it’s advised but contact with those vulnerable to the flu made it essential.

I am surprised at the low take up of the vaccine in hospitals. I would have though it would be compulsory for all involved in Health care

As someone works exclusively in healthcare construction it is mandatory at certain hospitals. I’ve gotten the vaccine the last five years running. No super ill effects to report. You can still get sick, but the main thing is to follow proper epidemiological controls, scrub in, scrub out etc. I’ve also found that lifestyle plays a huge roll too. Proper nutrition, lots of rest etc. When I have gotten sick it’s usually exposure coupled with working far too many/off hours (coupled with the poor eating habits that usually entails) that has gotten me sick.
