A couple of us have started in on It Can’t Happen Here? First chapter was interesting. Any thoughts?

“Vulgar, almost illiterate, a public liar easily detected, and in his “ideas” almost idiotic…he was an actor of genius”.

That’s from Chapter 9, where the hero goes to attend a speech by Buzz Windrip. Pretty insightful-we’ve seen a fair few of those types in US politics since Lewis’ day. Also of note is Windrip’s Steve Bannon-like mentor, Lee Sarason, who feeds Windrip far-right and populist ideas.

The novel’s tone is going from screwball satire to tragedy-as of
chapter 22, Windrip has taken power, and there are summary executions on a massive scale (including one of the hero’s loved ones) and a huge book-burning similar to the ones the Nazis did (one wonders if Ray Bradbury was familiar with ICHH).
