All the hits from 40 years ago! March 4, 2017

I was in the doctor’s surgery a week ago. Sunshine radio was playing in the background, a solid wall of 1970s radio hits. West Coast… Bill Withers, the Eagles, the most edgy thing being Steely Dan, etc, etc. And it struck me how odd it was that ‘mainstream’ tastes solidified largely in the 1970s. It’s not entirely like that of course, but it’s remarkable how impervious to change they have proven. It’s as if in 1970 people were listening to songs from the 1930s, or in the 1980s it was 1940s songs, but I don’t recall that they were in quite the same way.

That playlist does seem like the Irish version of the US “classic rock” stations, which are focused on pre-New Wave rock.

I work in a place with a radio always tunes to “modern pop” playlists.
And thanks to streaming, the Top 40 is clogged full of undemanding modern pap like Ariana Grande, Maroon 5 and bloody Ed Sheeran.

You do occasionally hear someone on it with actual talent, like Sia or
Rag’n’Bone Man , but they are very much the exception.
