The Great Wall March 18, 2017

Having seen this, as I was saying to GW in comments last weekend, while it’s not exactly the greatest film ever made I’d go along just for the spectacle. The creature effects and narrative is so so (actually it’s deeply silly) but the visuals of the Wall and warriors and the sense of place is fantastic. I see it’s not exactly cleaned up outside of China itself – the moment I saw subtitles I thought ‘hmmmm… this isn’t necessarily going to play well in some places’. A real pity. It’s nice to see something a bit different and given the hegemony exercised in terms of spectacle by near enough interchangeable superhero films (and by the by what does that tell us about contemporary culture?) pushing back against that is no bad thing.

If you missed it when it came out a few years back, the Chinese movie ‘Red Cliffs’ might be worth watching. Esp. the 4 hour Chinese version.
