UKIP’s man overboard March 25, 2017

Got to smile, even if only just a little, at this.

Ukip’s only member of parliament, Douglas Carswell, has quit the party to become an independent MP, prompting a backlash from within Ukip and among its supporters.

On his way back to the Tories? I wouldn’t be surprised. Notably he’s not standing down for a by-election claiming it isn’t necessary given he is not joining another party (!).

And just on this topic, surely UKIP are the most hapless party ever to have achieved near enough their hearts content? They’re seemingly unable to capitalise on it to any extent. Just one damn thing after another. And one would have to wonder at this…

Shortly after the announcement on Saturday, the Ukip leader, Paul Nuttall, said the party had not “benefited financially or organisationally from having Douglas in Westminster”.

I think it did actually. I think it put the fear of God into Cameron et al that he might be the first of a number to drift across and thereby solidified the former’s instinct to go for a referendum.

“Juncker describes May as a Brexiter and predicts Cameron will not be judged kindly by history. “I have met in my life two big destroyers: Gorbachev, who destroyed the Soviet Union, and Cameron, who destroyed the United Kingdom to some extent, even if there is no wave of Scotland to become independent.”
