A new man for FF in Dublin Central ? April 3, 2017

There was a piece in the Sunday Business Post (behind paywall) along the lines of Gary Gannon joining Fianna Fail
Fianna Fail members in Dublin Central have approached the Social Democrat Councillor Gary Gannon to ask if he would join the party ahead of the next general election.
Former Social Democrat joint leader and now FF TD Stephen Donnelly is quoted as saying re Gannon…
“I’d love him to join Fianna Fail, I think he’d be a phenomenal asset”
There’s been a rumour around Gannon joining FF since before The Social Democrats were founded and it reared its head again since Donnelly joined them. Gannon has on numerous occasions denied that he has any intention to join Fianna Fail. I’m told too that Gannon , although friendly with many FF people in Dublin Central, was not too keen on FF candidates in the Seanad elections due to his position on Repealing The Eighth.
As far as I know it’s internal FF stuff in Dublin Central….promoted by the anyone but Mary Fitzpatrick brigade.
Brian Mohan would have been the main other FF person as a potential candidate in Dublin Central, However he was denied the opportunity to run and subsequently took and lost a legal challenge to laws linking State Funding of Parties to General Election Gender Quotas. A move I’d hazard didn’t make him flavour of the month in FF HQ…. Hence Gannons name enters the fray.
Aside from Gannon having said he’s not joining FF, even were he to join, there is no guarantee that he would be selected. In 2016 Dublin Central was one of the Fianna Fail Selection Conventions that was “gendermandered” as HQ insisted they choose a female candidate. He would look very foolish joining FF only to not get a chance to run!!

So Mohan floats another male name, ( Gannons joins FF) FF HQ decides not to apply the gender directive to DuUblin Central, then at the convention Brian Mohan sweeps in and wins it.

Gannon may be a good hardworking chap but his writings are so painfully liberal that I want to smack him sometimes.
He’d be the perfect person to hurt a candidate who has a history of being anti-gender quota.

I suspect the big parties are gaming the gender quota thing by putting women in Dublin seats where there doesn’t appear to be any great risk – there are 17/44 female TDs in Dublin as against 18/114 for the rest of the country.

I think part of the reason that proportionally there are more female TD’s in Dublin is because there are proportionally far more SF/ Left TDs .

That’s a large part of it; but FG have 6 women TDs in Dublin and 5 for the rest of the country.
