Babylon 5 and Lord of the Rings… April 15, 2017

Posted by WorldbyStorm in Uncategorized.

Been rewatching the Lord of the Rings trilogy recently, but not each film in a single go. Nope, the handy break in the middle of the extended edition DVDs which brings them in around an hour and forty minutes is just right for a single viewing, whereas the full ‘extended’ films are… wearing. I thought I quite liked the Fellowship of the Ring until I made the mistake of watching it in one go.

But for those who have noticed curious similarities between a certain television property mentioned last week and the LOTR these links will entertain.

Here’s Wiki.

And here’s a Tolkien forum.

And a B5 forum.

Certainly JMS wore his love of the Tolkien fantasy on his sleeve. I’ve never had a problem with that, not in the slightest.

Anyhow I love seeing two distinct fandoms meet – some in understanding, others… well, read on…

1. An Sionnach Fionn - April 15, 2017

I did a B5 marathon watch not so long ago and mostly enjoyed it. Sure, there was an awful lot of overly-familiar storylines and stale SF tropes but by and large the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. Was kinda sad when I got to the end.

The Tolkienesque stuff is pretty obvious. I enjoy the forum defence of the use of “Rangers”. Yeah, I’m sure Straczynski’s was thinking of the US military version and not Tolkien’s when he adopted it 😉

2. Dermot O Connor - April 15, 2017

It’s not like old Tolky didn’t, ahem, ‘borrow’ from many sources himself.

He certainly did. For all history foreswearing Irish myth is that the Formorians i see over there and the Tuatha De Dannan here?

ASF Me too about feeling a bit sad, just at start of Season 5 again.
