I started Zola’s Germinal at the weekend. Not unlike Tressel’s Ragged Trousered Philanthropists so far, a grim reminder of 19th century proletarian life, before the gains of social democracy etc. A cracking good read it is too.

“The Nation, 1865-1990 : selections from the independent magazine of politics and culture” by Katrina Vanden Heuvel. A big anthology with some fine writing in it, including the fine essay
“A report from occupied territory” by James Baldwin.
